How do you transfer files directly?

So now that I have moved away from some of my friends, I can't stick something on a cd and go to thier house with it. If I have some program or a song or anything I want to share all I know of now is email. You try sending a 4 pics through yahoo mail. It takes forever to upload. I can't stand it any longer. There has to be a way to link up directly to another computer though the net to share files. Anybody?

depending on how many friends you have Maybe set up a DC++ server. DC++ is like limewire, but allows you to search individual people not just for a file or song. google DC++ for more info.

I used the usendit, I agree it works good. I like to keep it simple so I can still send stuff to my mom. Thanks for the great info!

Umm, you manually add a machine as a server and then browse the server. The real issue is that as Limewire comes up, you'll want to stop incoming searches.

Do this on both machines:
  • Control panel
  • System
  • Remote
  • Check "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer"
  • OK
Note that the machine that you're connecting TO must have a user account that has a password and you'll need to open TCP port 3389 in the routers of BOTH computers.

Now try to open a connection. On one of the machines:
  • Start
  • Programs
  • Accessories
  • Communications
  • Remote Desktop Connection
  • Click Options
  • Local Resources
  • Local Devices/(check)Disk Drives
  • Click General
  • Enter the WAN IP address (the one that the DSL/Cable provider sees) of the remote system
  • Click Connect
  • Click through the Security Warning
  • Log into the remote with a user account that has admin rights
  • On the remote, open My Computer. If everything is kosher, then under "Other" you should see a number of drive letters that have a comment of "Disk from Remote Desktop Connection". That's your local machine as seen on the remote. File transfer is just a matter of drag & drop through explorer.

As an aside, no matter what you do though (AIM, LimeWire, Remote Desktop), remember that you're still limited by the upload speed that your ISP has defined. If it's 384KB, then that's it. The fact that your buddy may have a 15MB download speed means nothing.

(edited to add Leo's info about choosing "Disk Drives")

2 things:

1. the account on the machine you are REMOTE DESKTOPing into, must be allowed to RDC into. if you have setup the admin/limited account setup on the remote machine (like you should be doing anyways...), the admin accounts dont have to have permission. but the limited accounts do.

2. before you hit the CONNECT button, hit the OPTIONS button, then the LOCAL RESOURCES tab and click on the DISK DRIVES checkbox. otherwise, the drives on the remote machine will NOT show up on your EXPLORER...

I just upgraded to the latest version of YIM last night and they are advertising you can now transfer files up to 1 gig using YIM. Like was pointed out though you are limited by the upload speed of the sending CPU.

I got another option for you... Look into RCP, it's a built-in command for WinXP.

me and 4runninfreak transfered a gig of music over AIM one night. worked fine that way. he just dragged the whole folder of songs into the chat window and pressed send. By morning I had all the songs on my computer.

Did you see what Leo (ldivinag) added above? When you have Remote Desktop up, and before you click "Connect":
  • Click Options
  • Local Resources
  • Local Devices/(check)Disk Drives
  • Click Connect
  • Click through the Security Warning
  • Log in with a user account that has admin rights
  • On the remote, open My Computer. Under "Other" you should see a number of drive letters that have a comment of "Disk from Remote Desktop Connection". That's your local machine as seen on the remote
Lemme know if you're still having trouble!

just to add to RDC...

like today, i was working on a machine that i GHOSTed the previous HD onto a portable USB drive.

so i needed to retrieve individual files off it. unfortunately, the GHOST program i carried didnt have the GHOST EXPLORER program with it.

so i RDC'ed into my main work machine. i clicked on the DRIVES checkbox so i can the remote machine (my work one) can see the drives on the one i was working on.

i ran the GHOST EXPLORER program and i selected the \\TSCLIENT\C... drive (that's how the remote drives show up on RDC) which had the GHOST image.

so essentially, i ran program on a remote machine, which used a data file on the portable drive connected to local machine. it then wrote the extracted files back to the DESKTOP folder on the local...

more fun and tricks...

at work, we have a strict firewall policy. they dont like to issue static IP addresses.

so on a secondary web server i run, which has a static IP addy, i can RDC into it from my home. then once i'm in that, i open an RDC session to my work machine (which has a leased IP) so i can grab a file off it... saves me the hour roundtrip drive...

tip #2: to bring up the TASK MANAGER on a RDC, you can use the standard CTRL-ALT-DEL. cause that will bring up the TASK MANAGER on your LOCAL machine...

no biggie... just CTRL-ALT-END... does the exact thing on the remote machine.

FWIW, people who uses the silly windows XP WELCOME LOGIN SCREEN, with the stupid icons, CTRL-ALT-DEL brings up the TASK MAN immediately. those who turned of the WELCOME LOGIN SCREEN (as should everyone...) will get the WINDOWS SECURITY, and one of the buttons to click is the TASK MAN...

tip#3: wanna see a weird network printing? RDC it... yup... just check (actually, by default it's checked already) the PRINTER checkbox under the OPTIONS -> LOCAL RESOURCES tab, and now the printers on the local machine shows up on the remote machine's PRINTERS control panel...

so if you run program on the remote machine and issue the PRINT command from it, you can actually print to the printer next to you, from a machine miles away... lol...
