Finally upgrade to XP and have a couple problems...please help

Ok I finally upgraded to Windows XP. My first problem is with McAfee. I was running it before and now it is listed in the add/remove programs list but isn't listed under my Start Menu and isn't running. How do I make it start working again? I noticed a change button under the add/remove programs list for it but I don't know what it does.

My second problem is with my printer. When I reinstall it, the computer does not see it when I plug the USB cable back in. I uninstalled it and reinstalled multiple times but always got stuck on the part where I plug the printer in because it isn't recognizing. I also tried unplugging the printer from the wall but that didn't do anything either. Any ideas?

Thanks for any help. I greatly appreciate. Hopefully now I can spend a little more time on YT because my internet is back up.

McAfee - reinstall it. That's probably the easiest way to handle that problem and prevent future problems.

Printer - sometimes "uninstalling" a printer doesn't completely remove old settings. If you go to your printers website, a few of them have tools that really completely removes all settings left by that printer. Also, make sure you're using the right printer driver. I've had instances where the one shipped with the CD wasn't the right one. Try the one downloadable from the printer's website.

I'd be surprised if these were all of the problems you're going to experience. Upgrading to Windows XP is never a good idea. The only time I would ever do it is over a clean install of Windows 2000. But I hope your luck is better than mine.

Problem ONE Youre running McAfee, GET RID OF IT. the Free Version of AVG is better than McAfee. You have no idea how many computers I've had to fix and remove virus's on and the users were running McAfee.

As for your printer problem. Did you download the latest drivers from there website ? check as mentioned above for a uninstall program.
Also check your device manager make sure all the motherboard USB Device drivers are loaded properly (No yellow ! beside them) and that there are not any other UNKNOWEN DEVICES listed.

Take the advice and dump Mcafee.
I ran it for years, and it is a system :pig:

I now run AVG 7 (paid version) and would not run anything else.
Small footprint, and updates just about every day.

Well McAfee was free through the school and that's why I run it. But I'll consider dumping it like you guys said. I fixed that problem by reinstalling it.

After looking in my Device Manager, I found I was having USB problems with my printer. Windows found a new USB driver and then I was able to successfully reinstall my printer.

Thanks for the help. So far XP is ten times better than ME was.

Bingo! Very little driver support from any vendors yet, making printing very difficult. There just aren't very many apps out there that are written yet to take advantage of the 64-bit processing to make using XP64 a good OS. It will probably be at least a year for most average PC users to see any benefits from making the change.

fwiw, I thought I'd spread the knowledge by pointing out that the FREE version of AVG is available here, and the Pro version is here.

It's not terribly clear when you come blowing into the site that there's a separate server for the free stuff.
