Digital Video Editing Software

Anyone use a digital video editing software for their home movies, something under $200?

Pinnacle Systems has the Pinnacle Studio products and Dazzle Digital Editing too.

What do you use, likes and dislikes and ease of use?

Final Cut Express is really good and basically a decontented Final Cut Pro. That's about the best in the industry.

However I think FCE is about $280 (?) it's worth it though

Provided yo have a Mac, Final Cut Express is amazingly sweet.

I've only done a bit of work on it, but my girlfriend (who does amazing work) producing some really cool stuff.

The nice thing too is that it interfaces perfectly with iDVD or, if you're a millionaire, DVD Studio Pro.

Then it's straight to a Superdrive and viola!

I've yet to burn a coaster, but iDVD 4 takes some major time to burn, even small discs.

Yeah anything takes a while on DVD but it's better than nothing I guess. FCPro is what I use on 35mm film so FCE is really like learning a pro skill, plus it's the best editing tool.
Get the 30" flatscreen and 2GHz dual proc G5= you can edit HD in real time & full screen!HOLY CRAP!!

My bad, I should have included my PC specs, no Mac:

P4 2.4 ghz, 640 megs DDR, NVidia GeForce 4 TI 4600 128 meg video card, 2 80 gig HDs (Western Dig 7200 RPM - primary w/ OS and secondary for video storage), Win XP Pro SP1, DirectX 9.0b, USB 2.0 ports + FireWire card.

I'll be adding an external HD (120 or 160 gigs) and a DVD+RW/R burner too.

Thanks again for any input.

Premiere is pure crap. Even "free" on Kazaa it's too expensive and definitely not worth it.

For basic editing on a peecee, Pinnacle should do just fine for you.

i have used Adobe Premiere (also "acquired" from the dark side of the internet) for a long time now and i love it... i used professional video editing software for a while at school called AVID which requires separate external hardware components and cost some major $$$... i used Pinnacle studio 9 once and found it too "dumbied" down and hard to use because they wanted to make it almost too simple and dumb. (cant have multiple video and more importantly multiple audio tracks) this may be due to my experience with more professional editing software but i didn’t like it at all.. That’s my $0.02

if you can find it for academic discounts, i HIGHLY recommend sony's (they recently bought it from sonic foundry) VEGAS VIDEO...

this will give premiere a run...

I though the same thing until I sat down and figured out how to use it. before I just used windows movie maker which isn't bad considering. Premire despite your opinion is the the most powerful video tool there is until you get into $20G + catagory. I'll try pinical a try
