Comcast users beware

I was an early adopter of Comcast's latest modem technology, DOCSIS 3.0. Theoretically, downloads should eventually reach 128 Mb/sec. Practically, it's unacceptably buggy.

Since "upgrading" in January, I've had downtime vary between 50% and 100%. Numerous techs and supervisors have tried everything including rewiring the house, but the problem persists. They've gone through five modems (Motorola SB6120) that each last between an hour to a month and require several resets daily to operate at all. Today they're blaming DOCSIS 3.0 nodes serving my neighborhood and admitted the technology was released prematurely.

Comcast won't restore my trouble-free DOCSIS 2.0 service. I think I've become their guinea pig. No more. I'm switching to Verizon FIOS before month end. The current FIOS deal will save $65/month compared to Comcast (guaranteed for two years) and includes a free wireless router/switch, $150 cash card, installation and activation.

Just a heads up. A free upgrade sounded good, and I've had excellent service from Comcast in the past, but times have changed.

I hope this posts before modem #6 fails...

I had trouble with my old Arris and Motorola modems when they added the DOCCIS3 support last winter. The last tech swapped me out for an Ambit modem and so far it has been pretty solid. It only does DOCCIS3. I think I am still having issues though, some sort of intermittent noise on the cable running down the street. While the older modems would get knocked off-line and not reset, the new modem just slows down until the noise goes away, but it does keep running.

Sorry to hear that Bob.
I must be on DOCCIS 2?
I run the Surfboard 5100, and my speeds are around 26,000 down, and 5,000 up, which is pretty darn fast.

Faster than Boeing here on the download.

Hopefully the Verizon works out well for you.

4C, that's what's happening to my connection, noise, lots of it. Enough to fry modems, drop phone calls and cause breakup on TV, grrr.

Corey, your modem is DOCSIS 2.0. Keep it! Though I was seeing 38 Mb/15Mb with 3.0, it isn't worth the "upgrade" yet.
