My g/f got a new job that will require basic CAD. We were told that CAD doesn't run so well with a lot of laptops, any truth to that? She would prefer a laptop if it can be done. If so, is there any laptops that you recommend? Her work is going to pay for it, I don't think she wants to go completely crazy with the cost, but doesn't want to get a POS either. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

not much truth at all, especially for "basic" CAD (computer aided drafting, computer aided design may involve more programs)

if you are running only 2D Cad, such as AutoCAD (regular 2D) then almost any laptop should work for basic stuff, if the files start getting huge and complicated, more memory, processor, and graphics card amounts will be better, expect $500-$1000

If you are running something 3D such as AutoCAD Inventor, SolidWorks, etc, then it will need to be a bit beefier, look for 128-256 dedicated graphics, a good amount of ram, and a good processor, expect $1000-$1500 or more

If running unigraphics, FEA, or complicated files in other 3D programs, look for a very strong system

what program exactly will she be using, and what exactly will she be doing? dimensioning? designing? details are important

solidworks seemingly runs fine on the lame dells in my english classroom (in an engineering building)

I dont really know how to use it i just play with it instead of paying attention in class

Thanks for the info. I figured how well any program runs has to do with what hardware is in your laptop, but someone told her that CAD didn't run very well on their laptop, so I thought I would ask. I don't know what program she will be using, but do know it will be in 3D.
