ATT. Comcast HSI users

Some of you may have received an email from Comcast in the last day or so.

Quote:
Dear Comcast Customer,

We are always looking to serve our customers by continuing to improve our service offerings. We want to make you aware of a planned network upgrade - scheduled to take place this Sunday January 9, 2005 between 12:01 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.

During this 12 hour upgrade on Sunday January 9, 2005 between 12:01 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time, please do not unplug or restart your cable modem, router or home networking gateway, or reboot your computer.

The upgrade is designed to enable our High-Speed Internet customers to be among the first to access new information, entertainment and communication services. It also is designed to deliver additional network security and reliability, streamlined billing, and enhanced customer support and installations.

Turning off your computer during this time could potentially cause a service interruption until the network upgrade is complete on Sunday January 9, 2005 at 12:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. (Note: If there is severe weather in your area, we ask you to make sure you follow normal precautions and turn off and unplug your computer).
I just called to pay my bill and I asked about the part about not rebooting the PC or turning it off.
She said to leave it on as they will be gathering information for the 4 MB upgrade we are getting soon from the 3 MB we have now.

I asked if they are pushing data to me, or me to them.
She said neither, but I really do not buy that.

I said I reboot my PC several times a day on weekends, and she said no need, and why do I do that.
I explained that if you are a gamer, you often reboot when coming out of a memory intensive game.
Her reply was then do not play a game from midnight Saturday night until after 12 PM on Sunday afternoon.

I wonder what info are they gathering that it is so important that I must not reboot, and that the PC must be on.

I've recieved that email before. I have a laptop and when I'm not using it, I close it and it goes into "hibernate", and then shuts itself down after a few minutes, I've never noticed any problems after the "service upgrade". I wouldn't worry about shutting it off, they can't seriously expect everyone to remain connected during the entire time.

Corey, that same "upgrade" occurred in my area on 12/19/04. I shut down at night as usual with no harmful effects. I did a before and after d/l test and it was the same 3.0Mb/sec rate even after a hard reset of modem and router. Their email they made no claim of speed improvements, just content.

The 4.0 is suppose to roll out sometime this month according to the leaks over at DSL Reports.

I just find it odd to improve content they want your PC left on with no reboots.

Found a little more info on this at DSL Reports.
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/rema...6142~mode=flat

Seems it may be OK to turn the PC off if you have a router.

Comcast, such fools. Here's the deal. If you have a router than Comcast can't see your PC. Because the router firewall will prohibit comcast from sending packets to your PC.

Comcast thinks by increasing the download stream to 4 mbits will improve your internet experience. But, I differ. Until Comcast unlocks the 256kbits up stream we are stuck with mediocre or poor performance.

My 2 cents (not including inflation, local or state taxes, not valid in Hawaii or Alaska)

Another letter came today with a little more info.

The 4.0 upgrade will not happen for awhile still, but I am still wondering about this other stuff they deem so important to tell you to leave the PC on.

Oh well, my bedroom will be bathed in green light tomorrow night while I sleep I guess.

Was going to try out a Linksiss router this weekend, but now I will wait until this is over.

I think they are saying if you turn off your computer, you might not be able to reconnect. If you leave it on you are OK.

(?????????????????)

Guess I'll leave it on so I'm connected on the AM..........Gotta have my YT with my java.

Dave, I am turning off my PC when I tonight.
If I can not get on in the morning, listen very carefully from your porch for a scream from the land of Auburn.

working for a cable company they cant pull information off you computer unless you have signed something saying they could. now it could have been in your AUP, but i know when new customers sign up with us they are asked if they would like to send information to us to better help them in the future. and the stuff we get is just what OS, browser, email client, memory, stuff like that.

One reason i can see why they would want to make sure the device behind the modem stays on. is that they might want to pull the MAC address off of it to register it on the CMTS
