Anyone running Linux?

I wanted to run Linux back in the day, when It first made an apperence, but, never did. I lost touch with the idea until recently, and have been very excited about trying it again.

Anyone here running Linux? Which one? Im guessing Debian based Linux is still the most popular? Im downloading Ubuntu at the moment, and going to run it off of a CD first and then make a partition on my secondary harddrive if I like it.

I've been trying to read the most I can, but, I'm still a little lost on if I can run pretty much everything I have on windows on Linux.

I have used Mandrake Linux on Intel, and YellowDog on Macintosh. Both successful and fun. Its been a while though... Lately I'm just using Mac OSX, Win XP. The downside of using Windows is you go broke buying defense software subscriptions and spend half your life loading updates and patches LOL.

you, as a windows user, will love ubuntu.

i use it, much to the dismay of some of my "hardcore" linux friends.

my feeling on it tho, it works for me, its easy, and its NOT windows.

i agree that ubuntu will be the best starter. i have used many many distros and find that ubuntu is the one that "just works" the most. i've fought many distributions that didn't want to work with my wifi, my sound, or my video. this was back in the day of course, things get better every day.

i use strictly macs now and i never have time to do programming and editing like i used to. os x is unix based, so it gives me the exact flexibility i need for my daily activities. regardless, os x OR linux > windows x1000

Welp, im typing this right now in a linux based OS! Yay me.

First thing I did was make the "looks" of it cool. hah

Since im running 64 bit, I have to get some drivers and such. Stupid Flash doesnt support 64bit, grr..

what distro? i havent used the most up to date distros because i havent done linux in several months but if youre starting BRAND new to linux...welcome to the world of trying to make things work right

i was a redhat then fedora freak, but the problem was with core 4 it was bloated and slow, so i switched to ubuntu.

anther reason i love linux.

was using my windows laptop for solid works for one of my classes
windows just took a total ÅÅÅÅ, blue screen, restarts, everything. i didnt get to fix it, and cant finish my work for today.

i hate windows lol.

i've played wiht Ubuntu, Kbuntu (KDE version of ubuntu), Knoppix, and fedora. i am currently in the hunt for a cheap old computer to set up running linux so i can learn more.

Im running ubuntu and haveing a hell of a time building Myth for my PVR box on my amd 64 puter.

if it werent for the MythTV setup its great. comes "preinstalled" with just about everything the home user needs. (and UT04 supports linux)

with my current fustrations with MythTV i may just go with KnopMyth .... but that would mean i have to rebuild the kernal for the 64bit processor and i dont know that any better than the MythTV build sooooo....

good news is it helps to have a real computer nerd friend thats been on the Apache development team for years to lend you a hadn for the uber nerdy stuff..

if you just stick to the 'out of the box" experience its great.

I have a computer that runs Fedora 4, which I like the best so far. As far as the question in the first post, just use WINE if you want to run windows programs that you cant find available in linux.

what are yalls experiences with linux and wifi? ive been through hell with it but that was...6-7 years ago, its gotten better, ubuntu worked with a little coaxing on my previous intel wireless

I use fedora core 5, it's pretty shiney. Altho also bloted if you install and run it as is. But with a little tweeking

you can speed it right up. Try as many distros as you can untill you are happy with one

As far as wifi goes i found that it only took me 10 minutes to set it up with my last install. But 4 years ago it took almost a week

i remember trying everything i could to get wireless to work. apparently back in the day the orinoco gold cards were awesome cards to have that had good support in linux but i didnt feel like buying one. i was tyring to get my prism54 chip card to work and it was hell. i got it to work once i gentoo with ndiswrapper but it wasnt efficient at all. ubuntu finally solved the problem, i was stoked about it.

i also had big issues with samba and windows print queues but late one night after about 3 days of working on it it printed and i was about to cry i was so relieved haha

Gentoo seems to work best for me. It was a little difficult installing (over 2 years ago) but they seem to have fixed that. Now it is one the simplest systems to maintain. Very well supported too. Fairly similar to the package management system like Ubuntu - except more powerful. MythTV seems to install better on it than other distros.
