Any free programs to speed up comp?

Anybody know about any free programs to speed up the comp. The only things I do now is Defrag, delete temp. internet files, scan hard drive. Or is there anyting else to try on my comp. I'm running win XP.

Those programs really do not do all that much. What you really need to do is delete all of your unused TSRs, or programs that are always running on your computer even if you do not load them yourself. Using the msconfig utility is probably the easiest to use and easiest to fix if you remove something you shouldn't have. To use it, go to start and then click run. Type in msconfig and click ok. Click the startup tab and then remove anything you do not need. If you are not sure if you need a certain item, type in the file name at your favorite search engine. Usually there will be a match that will tell you what the program is.

msconfig will be great for making sure the comp is not loading crap at startup. I also use wintools pro and system mechanic for further cleaning....be careful with sys mechanic (sometimes you can get into trouble by cleaning too much and some programs may need to be reinstalled).

Another program to download is HijackThis. It shows everything that loads when both the computer and the Internet load. The best thing to do with this program is to run it, save a log of everything, and then post it on a forum and wait for the other users to tell you what to delete.

Ok, I ran msconfig and narrowed it down from about 15 to 2 things running. Personally didn't notice much difference. I ran the hijack log once when I had a problem removing a trojan. Who would you recommend to show my latest hijack log to? Reading a hijack log is like reading chinese to me

Run a spyware program too ie. Adaware or Spybot...not everything is in the msconfig tool, but a good amount is. Go through the add/remove utility in your control panel and get rid of the junk you dont use or never knew you had.

Are you running any Anti-Virus software? Those have the tendency to really kill your boot times. Is your comp overall slow or just boot times? How much ram and how fast is your comp?

I sent a log to supernerd, let me know when you read it.

Maybe it's just that I'm impatient waiting for new pages to load, but it is quicker since the msconfig

9.8 m per sec per sec, or in english, 32.2 fps/ps is the acceleration of gravity. I think he was thinking that you should drop the thing on the ground.
I would back-up my files, Fdisk, reformat and re-install the OS. Takes a few hours but cleans all the junk off ther machine. You probably into several hours of trouble shooting already, I say, start over.

byte the bullit and buy norton systemworks. run speeddisk , cleen sweep , windoctor and disk doctor. your system will be new again

you can get some adware deleting prog. such as spybot search & destroy....its a free prog, i doubt it will speed up your system all that much but it does a pretty nice job getting rid of all that adware you may have on your system.....

procs, motherboards, and hard drives are really cheap. Software isn't going to speed up your computer.

System performance doesn't increase at all above 2.8 ghz. Better arcitecture does do wonders and a great video card make all the differance when your rendering video and playing games and editing photos. If your system is not being maintained u can have a sun server that won't perform worth a crap.
U need somesort of maintinace software. mcathree , fix it utilities or norton system works <-- what i use. Even with a fresh install of windows this program found 125 registry errors. I run everything 1 once a month and every time I get at least 100 errors from windoctor. a gig of memory is releaved and get a very noticable increase in performance. Time and time again my little 2.4 outperforms my friends 3ghz systems during LAN parties, the only differance is I run my maintinace software. and they have your attitude, need more hardware capability to increase sytem performance. spend that money

I've worked wonders with that program. I've taken a computer that could barely run and made it easily usable again. I say do this first and then move on to the more complicated stuff.

Also scan for viruses.

though I still have and use my 700mhz laptop. works alright. had to take xp off and put win98 back on.
