about:blank virus

I can't get this stupid virus off my computer (pops up an "about:blank" page everytime you start internet explorer) and apparently every so often Norton pops with a file that says it found a trojan virus and I can't delete it. Anyone know what to do?

I did the Google thing, and found this.
http://www.pchell.com/support/aboutblank.shtml

Sounds like a lot of stuff to go through.

How did you get the virus?
Are you running any protective software too such as Webroots Spysweeper?
That and AVG anti virus software are all that I run, and I never get one.

I do not trust any Norton product.
They are very CPU :pig:ish, and often are more trouble than its worth running them.

I use to like Mcafee though, but it is bloatware and also CPU intensive.
AVG hardly uses any system resources, and they release new DAT files about every day.
Highly recommended.

You could...

-find the location of the virus and try deleting it yourself.
-find the name of the virus and download a cleaning tool.
-download a spyware program to clean it for you (such as SpySweeper).

The info on that page seems to be more than enough of what you'd need. Good luck.

As much as I'd like to say I got it from an adult site, I think I got it from believe it or not an anti-spy site because all my problems happened when I downloaded their free software

No, but do you think I should? I just bought Norton 2005 and you mentioned it's CPU pigish. The thing is, after all the rebates and what not, the software was free from fry's electronics.

AVG, Anti Virus Group
http://www.grisoft.com/doc/1
I am running a paif for version 7, but I believe they are offering that version for free now.

Never ever click on one of those banner ads that says you may be infected with spyware, and they will scan for you.
That is a surefiire way to get a virus and spyware.

Some of those sites look legit too.
A friend of mine as searching for a file to run on a game server, and Google found a site for him that looked very legit.
After he installed the file, bam!
Ads all over his desktop.
He used System Restore and was able to recover from it.

Spysweeper and the free program Spybot Search & Destroy are the two best anti spyware apps out there.
