why all the CB radios?

when i went on a run this weekend with some forum members the first question they asked me is if i had a CB. i was surprized, i thought that the CB was a dead technology. ive been using the new gen "walkie talkies" for hunting for a years now and they have all the range (or more)that ive read these CB radios have for less money and zero installation.

sooo....why is CB a staple of the wheelin culture?

CBs will work better in the mountains when you have ridges between you from what most have found than the little GRS radios.
I have a good pair of those too.
Plus many have hot rodded their CBs to put out a little extra power.

The trend is moving towards ham radio now though, and I am in the middle of an installation in my rig for a mobile unit.
Many use the two meter band when 4wheeling, and with the number of repeaters around the country, you can get out pretty far on them, and are much clearer than CB.

The technician license is a lot easier to get now than in the past since Morse code has been dropped.

There is always something to be said for permanently mounted hardware.. it stays put, batteries don't go dead, you can HEAR it when its loud, and you can find it in the dark and see the controls. So CB or Ham, either way, there are benefits over the "talkies".
