Poor boy awesome GPS

So I've been investigating many Off-road GPS options.

First let me start by saying I'm sure there are better ways, but none I guarantee are this cheap.

Terracrosser

Terracrosser is a program that is free and caches google maps or yahoo maps to your computer. You basically pick a region and a zoom level (or multiple zoom levels), then it will go through and download the entire map for the area and zoom. For us the Google Maps 'Terrain' maps are perfect. Topo maps.

You can then transfer it to a Windows Mobile device. Once on the Windows Mobile device you can use GPS in conjunction with Terracrosser and the maps you have loaded to have a very useful offroad GPS. I have not yet used this off road as I just put my kit together but I'll update this as I learn more. I've downloaded a Los Angeles map for fun just to test it's reliability.

My hardware set up:
Old Treo 700w (been sitting for a couple years)
Tom Tom MkII Bluetooth reciever ($20 on ebay, shipped)

I was going to buy a Dell Axim or something similar for a larger screen but I figured I would use the Treo to test it out first. I'll let you know how it goes.

So I tested the setup this weekend. Worked great. Another useful feature, you can incorporate Placemarkers from google earth and upload them to your maps. Now they just need to incorporate tracking.

As a clarification to 91's comment - this software creates the maps on a pc/laptop but can only be used as a gps system on a windows mobile device.
