New Cobra GMRS/FRS (12 miles)

Saw this on C/Nets site today.
http://www.cnet.com/4520-10602_1-5619936-1.html?tag=new

This new GMRS/FRS twin pack from Cobra claims to have a 12 mile range.
I have never used these little type of two ways, always used CB for wheelin'.

But if they live upto their claim, they would be a good radio for backup, or if someone in the group does not have a CB.

I highly doubt that they will live up to 12miles. I have had many FRS radios including a pair of motorola distance FRS 2watt radios. They are much better than the normal .5watt FRS radios, but still only really do about a mile or 2 in real world conditions (I used them skiing mainly) the 2watt radio's are the only ones that I have had that can actually reach across my favorite east cost mountain Killington. They would need at least 4-5watts of output to generate that distance, I don't see that happening.
