"Geocaching"
Anyone ever heard of this?
http://www.geocaching.com
It's sort of like a huge easter egg hunt with GPS. When you find a bucket you leave a little prize for the next person and take anything that's left behind. Usually the containers are in crazy places. Some are as easy as a public park, while others are way out in the woods or on the sides of mountains.
I am too poor for GPS, and I don't have time for such things, but it sounds like it'd be interesting.

This is actually starting to pick up some mainstream media attention now...
There's been a couple threads on geocaching and it looks like there's a good following on this forum. I've gone once with my girlfriend and we both enjoyed it. We'll probably go again sometime in the future

I have recently started in this activity. Labor Day weekend I found
two and enjoyed the hike in the mountains.
You can use satellites costing millions of dollars to find cheap trinkets!

Great fun, I like to pick out 4WD-accessible caches and combine finding them with some fun wheeling to get there. Takes you into some country you might not otherwise get to. Here's a typical trip:

Same as my handle here: "4Crawler"
Only have 10 caches, but I tend to only look for ones that are way off the beaten path.
There is one about 100 yds. from my house in the middle of a huge patch of junipers, I looked for it once and decided no way am I spending an hour climbing around in there looking for it.

I have been Geocaching for years. Its pretty fun, and you can combine wheeling to make it even better. There was only about 4 of us and less than 50 caches in my area of 150miles when I started, now close to 50 of us and a couple hundred caches.

old thread but oh well,
i started doing this a couple of weeks ago,
i like finding the ones up in the woods off the beaten path.
theres a couple on the island in the middle of the columbia river
i'll hit this summer on the waverunners.
pretty fun family activity, when my son gets older i'll hide his easter eggs this way.
i was amazed how many caches there are around portland/vancouver areas.
you kind of look like an idiot walking around in circles looking for something
so i take the dogs along with me.
makes you really get to know your gps.
anyways lot's of fun.

My uncle got me interested in geoaching last year. I got my own GPS reciever for christmas. I've found 4 so far and got really close to #5 on my list. I found 2 other people at school that are in to it and I'm going tomorrow with one of the guys.
Roger, is there a way to find just the 4x4 accessible ones? Or do you just search the areas you are going on 4x4 trips for geocaches?

We started last December and it's a blast!! I like going to places I didn't know existed or places I'd been by before but never gave a 2nd thought.
I've finally figured out how to use all the features of my GPS

Had a very sucessful day geocaching. Found 3 new caches, was going to go for a 4th but it was far away and it was getting dark out.
Came away with a nice photo of Rachel and my Leah puppy (not so small anymore) finding the last cache.
