CB Installation location

Most people seem to choose the dash or front ashtray. I have a 2001 4Runner and was considering a "temporary" mount on the back of the armrest using the rear ashtray for the bracket. A smaller radio would be mounted vertically and have access to get under the carpet for wiring and can easily reach it with my right arm. Just wondering if anyone uses this location.

I have an 01 as well, and also couldn't decide where to mount my CB. I eventually went with the Cobra 75WX ST. It's mounted behind the lower centre console and is almost invisible.

one thing you might want to consider if you go this route is visibility and safety. unless you have a back seat passenger that can change channels for you while you drive, this might not be the safest thing. you'd have to reach back and look back/down to change channels, and depending on which way you face the radio, read the channels upside down.

granted, you still have to look away from the road and take one hand off the wheel with the dash mounted cbs, but it's much more visible and would take much less contorting to reach.

you may want to try mocking up the radio in that location before going for it and drilling or making a mount. i mock up my radios in several locations before actually mounting when i do an install.

or... if you are really set on mounting the radio on the back of the armrest, you could use that cobra radio with the mike-mounted controls?

I've been wondering the same thing. I have an '01 too and wanted to put one in, and everyone I asked said to get that Cobra one where all the controls are mounted into the receiver. I have a buddy that has a Ford F-250 and he uses that one with no problems. Along with the radio mount though, any good ideas for antennae mount? I'm saving up to upgrade to a new ARB bull bar/bumper combo and a rear ARB bumper too, but until then I don't know where to mount it. I don't it in front on my Warn brush gaurd either.
