Can anyone describe to me exactly what the squelch control does? It doesn't seem to affect the volume, power, strength etc. although I've only tested it short range.

It filters out background noise. If you change to a channel with your CB, and there is a lot of static noise, you can turn up the squelch until the static is no longer there. It will basically filter out any signals below a certain strength (or at least not play them through the speaker), so static is not registered, but a transmission with greater power than the static will come through.

Squelch can be a problem at long transmission distances because transmssions will be much closer to the static's power, and you may accidentally filter transmissions out as well.
