I had never even thought of storing the computer in the rear cargo compartment!

sweeeeettt...is your sound coming from the head unit or from the puter?
i use my ibook in the car sometimes with my cell as a modem...i would love to get GPS ging also

Been a while since I've seen someone else get into the project. Great to see. I would be carefull about heat in that space however. I've had issues during summer with really hot days, when the computer just will not boot for the life of it.
Hope all goes well, the one thing I've found out is that computers really don't like being in trucks and staying well behaved.

Sorry, I returned a few days ago from Alaska and I have a lot of work...
At the moment I'm running without the compartment lid, but I bought a 12cm temp controlled fan to be put in the lid.
The sound comes from the carputer, the head (screen) have the radio and the amplifier.
Every day I use it I like it more and more hehe.

You are now my official hero. I LOVE it!!!
You can use a GSM Edge Modem (here in the states) and have web access anywhere you can get cell coverage.
That is a great, clean, stealthy install. Awesome!!

Yeah Cebby, I could use the mobile phone to connect to the net, but it's easier to use any of the hundreds of open wireless LANs that we have here... (Opened by users or without their consciousness).
When I'd need to change my mobile phone I'll buy one with Bluetooth so I will be able to use my 4Puter as a handsfree and also send SMS's with it.

Man, that looks real nice. I'm just wondering how you are supposed to protect the hard drive if you are driving on a bumpy road, I'm pretty sure that bumps and a spinning drive aren't friends.

Well, it's at 90º from the ground, so the bumps only will do the head to jump but not to touch the disc in an extreme situation.
I'll do a different kind of support for the CPU, will try with some kind of foam.
It's nice to have all you can need in the truck... I have only to add a WC and I'll be able to live inside for a while hahahaha.

Even though it's mounted at 90 degrees I still wouldn't trust it to not bounce around as the vehicle is bouncing down fireroads, or climbing some rock. Just doesn't seem like it would last to long.

Great install though.
Most hard drives can take a 4G shock while spinning and a 10G shock while off. Most of the HD manufacturers (Western Digital, Maxtor, Seagate, etc.)have specs out on their websites as to what forces they can take.
I have driven through Oklahoma City (worst roads ever) with my laptop on a laptop mount and have never had the rattling affect anything internally.
PS) Way more than a nice installation - that is great!

Instead of a wireless mouse as one poster here suggested you could install one of those laptop touchpad things on the console behind the shifter. Or even one of those trackball things come to think of it this would be a better choice.
And I love the whole concept!
For a total stealth idea in the xtra cab truck you could mount the computer behind sidewall completely and hide a plug for a portable dvd cd cdr burner in the top of the glovebox where you can't readily see it, for extra motherboard cooling you could duct a cooling fan from under the rear seats and out the cab wall vent grill thingy in the side wall. put plugs for the keyboard and pointing device in the center console and you are laughing.
