Sub options for a first gen 4Runner

I've seen some custom setups before but can't seem to locate them. I have a 1988 first gen 4Runner and I want to put a shallow 10" or 12" sub in the back mounted to the side.

I don't want a big box sitting in the back because I use this area a lot for stuff. Any ideas?

I would like to mount it in that storage space to the right where my tow strap is.

i am about to do this same thing. i've just finished purchasing all the hardware, i need to get wires (monoprice.com) and then i need to strip the interior and start building cabinets.

i have a JL Audio 8w0-4 which was my replacement sub when i had the lexus. it's been a paperweight for the last year. i'm going to put it in that space on the right where your tow rope is.

my plan is to pull the right side trim panel, and build a small box out of mdf (the speaker paperwork gives the necessary volume, but i'm not too worried about matching the exact dimensions. it's not a competition vehicle.

but i will build the cabinet behind the panel, so that once i replace the panel, i can also replace the removable door and keep it out of sight.

by building the box, i don't have worry too much about reinforcing the qtr panels, which would flex if i just stuck a sub in the open space.

meanwhile, the factory rear speaker locations (the circle of holes poked in the panel under the rollbar arms) i think will hold 5 1/4" rounds when you pull the factory speaker housing out. i will stick to alpine 5 1/4" there, for full range sound when i'm in the back of the truck. they will resonate in the quarter panels, so they should have decent midrange. but the sub airspace will be separated because it's in that box.

in the front i'll put 4" coax with an aimable tweeter in the stock dash location, and in the rear seat i'll be cutting in 6x9s. those will be the only visible speakers unless i conjure a way to conceal them. i may build boxes for these as well, to tighten up their bass response, inside the quarters.

my problem is where do i stick my 5ch amp? i don't know where to put an amp in this thing. i am considering under the driver's seat, attached to the bottom of the seat to keep it off the floor. or on the ceiling of the cab. (no really) any other ideas?

You could always put the sub in a jerry can and ratchet strap it down using the tie downs in the back...I've seen that somewhere on here...
