there's actually an extra wire that goes to the back of my rig(supposed to boost signal). I believe this is for all 3rd gen's radio setup. I didnt know where to wire it to when i installed my alpine HU so i just left it there. I've heard everyone else is doing the same.

sure that isnt a power antenna lead? most stereo systems have those....
as far as reception, you can get a signal booster... i have found they really dont do much though.... FM is jsut not that great of a band for clarity.... the best would be digital sateliite radio, but thats expensive..... pretty much stuck with FM if you arent going to get satellite

Ray... you're kinda stuck dude. I had the same issue when I pulled my power antenna and moved to a FireStik. The original power antenna was great, even with my Sony HU, but once I had to replace it, it was never the same.
What's weird though is that I've never seen the tail of the diversity up behind the dash. I'm not sure where the mixer is, but it's gotta be there somewhere.

All radios are not created equal, but I'm sure you know that. It's probably th HU that doesn't pull the signals with any strength.
I have the complete opposite.
I was just telling my G/F yesterday on the way up to North NJ that the AM reception is really strong and clear. It's just like FM. No more of that hiss or humm that I always got it with.
Even with the factory radio I got it, but with that OEM NAV, it went away.
I never noticed it till last night since I only listen to it for severe weather and traffic updates.
