Installing rear speakers

Ok my 1990 runners speakers suck so I bought some new ones... Now I wanna know how to get to the factory speaker. Do I have to take off the entire plastic panel that hides them?

yep! Fraid so, Its not that bad. be careful, the clips on top in front of the glass break real easy!

ok so basically i took everything off and got to the speakers.. which is when i found out that i have 5 1/4" speakers, when i bought 6 1/2" speakers. it took me about an hour to shave and trim the black box they come in so they could fit. they fit good, but when i put the drivers side speaker box back in, they speaker barely fit, and the body is kind of covering the speaker. heres a pic, is this bad? there is clearance, but not that much, barely any....

oh and btw the orangeish stuff is insulation i had laying around so i put it to help close up some of the empty space from trimming too much.

sorry about pic quality, it was from my iphone with very little light in the there... i would trim the metal, but dont have any tools that could...

I pulled those boxes out and made two plates out of MDF to mount the speaker to. The problem with those boxes is that they might have an integrated amp. I think mine did. I ran new speaker wires from my Pioneer head unit to the rears.

anytime the system is altered in those year models, its gonna be realy custom. Not much is made to fit like oem. You can trim the sheet metal back with a cheap pair of tin snips, then use a file to smooth it out, thats the cheapest way that comes to mind.

yeah they do have the integrated amp, and everything works fine, but im worried that the metal panel is hitting the cone of the speaker. today im going to the store to find some of those tin snips and trim it out. one thing i did notice was that the other one flexes more than this one.
