HIGH OUTPUT ALTERNTAOR 2008 Tacoma

Without having to take my alternator off and have it re-wound, I am looking for off-the-shelf high output models that are available online. I know mean-green makes some nice stuff, maniac alternator also. I prefer a 185 amp rated alternater. My stock output is 130amps but just not enough. I'm running dual batteries and am taxing my electrical system with a 120 amp draw linear amplifier.

Any places I'm missing!?! I'm willing to spend upwards of 400 bucks to get as much amps as possible and still run a SINGLE alternator. I don't want to hack-up the underside of my motor for the sake of ruining my dealership warranty.

Damnit. Last time I tried finding ho alt information for my 97 tacoma I came up with nothing. Ended up with a dual alt install on that truck. Argh. So bump to me. Sorry for the selfish post bumps.

i know with a 22re you can drop the GM 160 amp alternator in with minor fab work... maybe the same with yours?

Anyone ever had one of their stock alts rewound by a reputable shop? If so how many more amps did they get out of your stock alt? How much did it cost?

Either PM TNRabbit, or search for some of his threads on this subject. He had his re-wound, but I can't think for the life of me, the name of the company who did it.

sorry, might be a little late, but many people running big power run big alts -

ohio generator and leece-neville are a couple of companies that are popular.

depending on the total current draw of all your electricals, you might be running a fairly large-case alt (like bigger than the GM units).

you can only increase output so much by rewinding the stock alt, and even then, heat becomes a big issue (premature failure).

also, when rewinding, i've been told that max output comes at a higher rpm than stock (i.e., if it's rated at 180 amps, you might only get those 180 amps at 5K rpm. actual output at idle levels may be LESS than the stock alt after it's rewound. at this point, then you'd be looking at overdrive pullies to get stocks amps at idle and city driving, but at highway speeds you'd really be spinning that alt fast (again, heat may become an issue).

also, some big radio folks run more than dual batts... like a whole trunkload of deep cycle batts.

replaced the a/c unit, or custom brackets?

were you using two oem alts, or did you go with GM large-case units or some other aftermarket comp. brand?

iirc, i did see some write ups on the mods necessary to fit large case alts into the T4Rs of those years (3rd gen, i think). had some cutting/filing/grinding of the case required along with some fabwork for the brackets, iirc. was looking into that myself, but i just didn't have the tools or skills to undertake a project like that.

i know the popular domestic vehicles for comps have aftermarket multiple alt. mounting brackets already made, including those that let you keep your a/c, but i don't know how easy it would be to find such things for your truck - these aren't the typical keyup or comp vehicles.

oh... also, have you thought about a motor maul system?

you'll need more batts, but maybe you can get by w/o adding another alt (assuming you can't find a drop-in replacement).
