I got a 93 yota 4x2 extended cab and i recently installed another aftermarket stereo (cd player) it already had an aftermarket tape player in it. Anyway I drove it for the first time at night last night and the entire dash and rear taillights do not work. The fuse was blown, but as soon as I put a new fuse in it blows. I checked the wires for constant and ignition power and hooked up accordingly. I hooked up the rear speaker wires from the cd player to the one speaker wire for each front speaker of the harness, I have not dove into the problem yet but wondered if anybody has encountered this problem before. I am going to take the center console apart tomorrow and recheck everything but figured it was worth a shot if anyone knew why the dash and taillights (not brake lights) fuse would blow even with the cd face removed from the player, it blows instantly. Thanks.

that's because it's a dodge! Of all the vehicles on the road, those are the most prone to electrical system ghosts. We once had a durango come in that preferred to stay unlocked and would randomly unlock itself no matter what you did....LOL


As far as the radio blowing stuff - you probably pinched a wire somewhere. Look for a pinched wire btwn the din braket and the vehicle's subframe. Also triple check ALL molex plugs to make sure that the wires haven't been pinched.

You did solder all connections correctly, and then insulate them with electrical tape right? Secondarily do NOT hook up your orange or orange/white to anything....

Lastly, you are ONLY running 1 speaker per channel on that deck right?!?

white is left front
gray is right front
green is left rear
purple is right rear

Bumpin is right about looking at the orange/white wire (dimmer).
That wire goes to the taillight fuse to sense if you have your parking lights on or off.
It dims the radio display we you flip on your parking lights.
You did use a wiring harness, correct?

I did not solder all the connections I butt connected them all. As for the orange wire my truck does not have one. I has a red wire with black stripping and a factory connector on it that i did not hook up obviously because there is no where to put it. It does not have 12 volts could this be the dimmer wire you guys were talking about. Anyway I took it all back apart and didn't find any piched wires but I wrapped all connections with electrical tape and made sure no wires were touching. My truck only has front speakers so I removed the rear speaker wires from the crimp with the fronts. I didn't realize it didn't have rear speakers, there is cuts in the rear panel where it looks like speakers would go but none. After putting it all back together it seems to work fine, maybe I pinched something or the wires were rubbing I don't know. Now I want to wire in my 5x7s in the door using the rear wires coming from the stereo, that is my next project. Thanks for the info. Oh yeah no wiring guide does anybody know about the red/black wire and is the green wire for the rear speakers?

ok butt connectors = garbage imo. Some shops use them, with me hell will freeze over before I use em...lol Do yourself a favor and silversolder em, it's actually fun and easy.

As far as unused speaker leads (and any and all unused wires) tape em up. This prevents accidental shorting out.

Red with black I dont know... However there should be 2 green wires, a green and a green with a black stripe. Those two greens are the left rear speaker. The two purples are right rear, the two whites are front left, and the two grays are front right.

yeah u guys are using the dash light wire as a ground. with the lights off it will read as a ground. When in doubt self tap it to some metal.

Had a stereo installed an on the way home realize I have no dash or taillights . replaced fuse an blew out instantly. The stereo is the only thing lite up in the dash. Any suggestions.?? The stereo stays lite up as soon as the Durango is started.

Back when I put a stereo in my 2000 4Runner I had the same problem. The fuse would blow as soon as I replaced it. It's been about four years since I did it so I can't point to the thread that gave me the solution but I opened the dash back up and took the ground wires from the truck and from the stereo and bolted them to some bare (I ground off paint) metal inside the dash. There have not been any problems since. You didn't say what year Toyota you have. I also have an '89 4Runner I bought from a member here about six years ago. Of course I went back and found all his posts and his biggest problem was blowing fuses when he put a stereo in. He fixed the ground too.

Stereos and trailer towing lights is the biggest problems I see with the electrical on these trucks. I would remove the stereo and see about getting an adapter kit that plugs the stereo into the factory harness. Kits are usually cheap, about $20 or less.

FWIW Terry, my 2000 is on a Toyota adaptor kit. Soldered and everything. It was blowing fuses anyway. I guess the vehicle side had a weak ground.
