I'm trying to fix a stock stereo. The wires BETWEEN the amp and stereo were hacked. I have a replacement connector, but the wires don't match the colors of the wires comming from the amp.

I need to map the color of the wires comming out of the amp to the pin locations on the connector. Does anyone have this information or would anyone be willing to take apart your stock stereo to tell me. This is from a '97 4Runner Limited with the 3 disc in dash changer. It is a different connector than my 2000. I'm not sure what year marked the change in stereo.

When I get around to installing my stock radio back in, I will take note of the wires and post them here for ya if nobody has helped before then. I dont know when that may be however. bump

And are you trying to retain the OEM radio? And easier solution may be to unplug the wires going to the stock amp and get an OEM radio that accepts those plugs (90%) of them will. Or you could just put in an aftermarket radio by again unplugging the amp. In any even send me those pics so I can give you what is what.

Ok, here are some pictures to help explain what I need. Sorry the quality is not that great. It was hard to get a close-up that wasn't blury.

These are the wires comming out of the amp and the ones that are attached to the connector (the colors don't match):

From left to right the colors are:

- Blue w/black stripe and 2 silver dots
- Pink w/blue stripe and 2 silver dots
- Black w/red stripe and 2 silver dots
- Brown w/2 silver dots
- Grey w/black stripe and 2 silver dots
- Black w/2 silver dots
- Green w/2 silver dots
- White w/2 silver dots
- Blue w/2 silver dots
- Red w/2 silver dots
- Yellow w/2 silver dots
- Grey shielded cable w/purple stripe that has the following wires:I need to map these wires to the pin numbers on the connector in the diagram above.

OK for a 97 4runner at the radio your wires are


Blue/Black - 12v constant
Grey/Black - Switched Accessory
Brown - Ground

Black/Red - Power Antenna
Pink/Blue - Remote Turn On
Violet/Light Green - Illumination
Brown - Mute

For the speaker output from the deck to the amp (toyotas version of a set of RCAs,) there will be 5 wires and they use a common ground. This common ground is white...

Blue - Left Front Positive
Yellow - Left Rear Positive
Black - Right Front Positive
Green - Right Rear negative
White - Common Ground for speakers

Finally talked to the original owner and the stereo was hacked when he bought it. But he didn't care since he wanted an aftermarket stereo anyway. He said the connector could be from a couple of different Toyota vehicles.

So am I screwed or what?

I only have one brown.

ok if you are going to hook up an aftermarket radio all is good....

Grab a digital multimeter and check for continuity to ground on the brown wire. If it does shows continuity it's ground. Im 99% sure that its ground but check it first.

I would actually like to get the stock stereo working. It was the previous owner who was only interested in an aftermarket stereo. Sorry about the confusion.

ok cool lemme run into work (wed) and have a very close look at our MET 808112 harness so I can tell you whats what on that plug from the mystery toyota...

Looking at the met 808112 amplifier intigration harness those wires are:

#1 wire is the antenna turn on
#2 wire is unknown
#3 wire is switched accessory
#4 wire is 12volt constant

#5 wire is unknown
#6 wire is front left positive
#7 wire is front right positive

#8 wire is antenna turn on
#9 wire is unknown

#10 wire is unknown
#11 wire is radio ground
#12 wire is the common ground for all of the speakers
#13 wire is unknown

#14 wire is left rear positive
#15 wire is right rear positive

Two of the unknowns must be for the tweeters since this 4Runner has the 6 speaker system. Also you mentioned that there was a wire for mute. Getting closer. Thanks for all your help Bumpin'!

I think I might just do trial and error from here. I'll let you know how it goes.

im kinda doubting that the unknows will be tweeter outs...they could be however...

Usually the output going to the tweeter is divided from the main signal at the amp, and in some cases at the tweeter....

Do you think that the shielding on the one cable that carries the illumination wires might also be carrying a signal?

I dont think that it would, but typically shielding is negative, as in the case with RCAs, etc.

OK, after several unsuccessful attempts at different wiring combinations based on the info that Bumpin' Yota provided, I went to the dealer this weekend and they copied the wiring diagram for me. Here is the difinitive information for the wiring between the stock amp and stereo for a 1997 4Runner.

Using this diagram of the connector:


1: AMP+ (pink/blue)
2: ILL+ (violet)
3: ACC (grey/black)
4: +B (blue/black)
5: MUTE (brown)
6: FL+ (blue)
7: FR+ (black)
8: ANT+ (black/red)
9: ILL- (light green)
10: unused
11: unused
12: S.GND (white)
13: BEEP (red)
14: RL+ (yellow)
15: RR+ (green)

For reference, the later model 3rd gen stereos are the same (based on the wiring diagram for my 2000). The connector itself is different, but it has 15 pins and the wires, their meanings, and the pin locations that they map to are the same.
