85 4runner stereo - no head unit...
I was looking into putting a new stereo into the 4runner. Problem is that my last one got stolen. The truck sits outside at night, and let's face it, they aren't that difficult to break into. I want music when I am driving and have decided that I need to get something into the rig.
Here is my idea... Use the iPOD as the 'head unit'. I can use this to connect it into an amp. This connector would allow me to get the signal from the iPOD and charge it at the same time. The amp would take the low output signal from the iPOD and turn it into a high output signal for the speakers. I only want to run two 6 x 9" speaker. The only problem I can see with this is volume control. When the iPOD is connected to the amp, I don't know if it will send the iPOD into charge only mode where you can't access the controls (like when you plug it into the computer). That leaves option 2. Take a RCA to 3mm jack, run that to the amp and then run a car charger to the bottom of the iPOD. This would allow me to get audio signal, control the iPOD and charge it all at the same time. Then I can take the iPOD with me when I leave the truck parked and at night. I can hardwire everything into the rig (I have my GPS wired in to come on with the truck as well). Does anyone have an opinion about this, problems that you see. Which option would be better in your opinion. Mostly, I am just looking to see what everyone thinks. Or, should I just suck it up and get the head unit that controls the iPOD and wire the speakers from there... The cost is about the same between amp and head unit, so that is not the concern. Mostly theft. I have three major reasons for not wanting to use a head unit. 1. Theft 2. I can't use the radio on the trails, and I a CD will skip in the first 2 seconds on the trail. 3. Dust gets into them and causes more problems. Thoughts, ideas?!? TIA, Brandon

Get a Tuffy lockbox center console and put your cd player in it, problem solved. The 6.5" wide one fits perfectly.

I never had a problem with a CD skipping...CD players have come a LONG way.
The great thing about the Tuffy is that the console locks up tight so you can protect your head unit (CD player) and your other stuff. Lots of space. ![]()

What about the mounting holes? Did you have to drill new ones, make custom brackets, etc. etc.?

I have a JVC HD Radio head unit with the iPod adapter. You can fully control the iPod from the radio or even it's remote control. I also have a Tuffy center console but for now the radio is located up in the dash.
