I just got a new HD radio for my 4runner, so i looked up the wiring diagram on the12volt.com, and it said that i should have a pink wire, but i dont. also, it says there are 12 wires on the12volt, but i only have 11 and they are different colors.

Any help?

Uhhh why dont you just buy the plug that goes straight into the stock harness?

Because toyota changed the plug(aka, the wiring harness) in 1987, and mines a 85 and i cannot find it
also, that cost monney, and i dont want to spend monney

Im 95% sure its the same harness. Just cause the companies dont go back that far, doesnt mean it wont work.... go to walmart, they're like 5 bucks.

you can always test the wires with a few simple tools:

digital mutimeter ( can get one at sears for $10 if you dont have one, always good to have anyway )

9 volt battery

soldering gun and solder

two pieces of wire about 8" long each.

white electrical tape to label your wires easily, also helps if you have to go back into those wires later for any reason



start out by soldering one piece of wire to each terminal of your 9 volt battery. make sure the unsoldered end is stripped and twisted so you have a nice piece of stiff exposed wire

with the truck off test the wires using your multimeter until one reads 12 volts ( or close to it ) it wont hurt to test them all even if you find the 12volt wire just in case. that wire is your memory wire.

next turn the truck on and test the wires until you have 12 volts or close to it. that will be your 12 volt switched.

for a ground wire you can ground to any solid metal object. simply find a bolt or screw within reach, clean the metal, crimp a terminal on the end of the ground wire put it under the bolt or screw and tighten it back down.

lastly the speaker wires. you can do one of two things, use the 9volt battery to " pop " your speakers or just simply uninstall each speaker and check its wire colors and match them with the ones behind the dash. if you want to use the battery to pop them you simply take the remaining wires ( should be 8 total 2 per speaker ) and touch the leads from the 9 volt to the wires in pairs until a speaker pops until you have found all speaker wires. and you now have your speaker wires figured out.


this will pretty much work with any type of non amplified factory stereos. hope this helps a little

it's the same as the 88, correct? (just want to know 100%, i only know 98%)

85 is different to 88 in terms of radio wiring. The 12 volt constant on mine is separated from the bunch of other wires and the wire color is black (you can definitely confuse it to be a ground wire)

just get the wiring harness from walmart, it has the connector for both older and newer radios for 4runners, and i think all toyotas
