04 HU replacement problems on 4runner w/ JBL 1 Disc
Is it possible to install only a new head unit in an 04 4runner with the JBL system? I know i need to bypass the amp, but i get different answers everywhere i go.
One place is charging a ridiculous amount for the install (~$250)
Another says i will lose the center speaker and sub.
Has anyone succesfully replaced the factory JBL head unit in an 04?
If so, is there a wiring harness or does it have to be hard-wired?
Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

you should have no problem doing this as long as you get the proper harness and mounting adaptor. You shouldnt bypass the amp because your speakers need it probably. what you need to look at is how the speakers are hooked up to the stock amp. is it RCA (component) or some weird OEM thing? If its RCA than there should not really be an issue as you just take your RCA cables from the back of hte HU into the amp and you should be fine. pics of the back of your new HU and the inputs on the amp would tell me exactly hwat you need to do

i think you may actually have to change out the amp, which i would actually recommend anyway. its funny you should ask this q, because the audio guy i use (he's the man) actually had an '04 in for a HU change when i had my 01 in for an amp install.
i asked him a lot of q's about it, and he said they couldnt use the factory amp.
its worth every cent to get a new amp, and you dont have to spend that much. look on hookedontronics.com for some good ideas and great prices.
