Is it okay to tell someone to "SEARCH!"

I and a couple of other folks have been called to task for telling people to "SEARCH!" when they ask about VERY common things like The Deckplate Mod, The ISR Mod, Seafoam, etc.

Is this an okay thing to do? Why or Why not?

My point in telling someone to search is that it reduces the duplicate information on the forum. People complain about the search engine, with a lot of the complaints being based around not being able to find what they're looking for. A LARGE part of that is because there is so much duplicate information!

I think it's certainly okay to start a thread HERE on YT about 4-link suspension, that information is hard to find - but "deckplate" "isr mod" "seafoam"??? It's all over the place - including the tech writeups!

Also, when _I_ tell someone to search, I almost always include an answer in the post. It could be in the form of my "obnoxious spinning SEARCH post", or it could be words, or it could be words and links. But 95% of the time I'm including an answer.

What do you think?

I think it is perfectly OK as long as it is done in a nice manner.

I also surf the worlds biggest FJ Cruiser forum, and there is nothing new under the sun over there, it has been covered.

I see tons of posts coming in from total newbs or older members who simply refuse to search, and it gets very old and tired fast.

You get a lot of enthused new members too telling others about something they just heard or found when it has been covered in great detail a week or a month before.

Searching first would solve about 90% of the reposts.

But the flaming type of telling a newb as seen on other forums does not cut it here.

Midiwall, Search this before you ask and you may find your answer.

Just kidding but I searched the phrase "search!" and got back 27 pages. Lol.

I'm kinda scared to ask any questions just in case I've missed it when I've searched 'cause sometimes people get a little rude about it....

....but you know, maybe that's the point. Newbie me searches extra extra hard before I make a new thread because I've seen all those search Search SEARCH posts in other threads.

But I didn't think you were rude...and you did give useful information as well. Many of you more experienced people tell us to search and then provide a link or two...very helpful.

Sometimes I'm glad someone begins a thread on something already covered because they're asking a question I haven't thought of yet. Sort of accidental learning for me. Then after someone chimes in with search and info or maybe a link and the thread fizzles....I do!

Thanks Steve... Thanks all...

I'm seriously hoping to attract a couple of the folks that I've seemingly upset over here so we can work this out.

Contrary to being told here the search feature is better than ever before, it is not.

I searched for Tofer's IT thread, and the search came back with zero results.
I had to scan through a few pages to find it in Off Topic.

So...
The search engine here does not work like it use to in the past.
That is out of my hands.

I agree with Habanero...I always try to search cause I don't want to get the dreaded search you idiot reply...I have found that sometimes I can not find what I am looking for even when I know the exact text in the thread...and that I too sometimes find stuff you longtimers feel is a no brainer but it is new info to me. I read the thread then read the links supplied which are always a ppreciated. I don't mind being asked to search but don't just assume we didn't search and always supply a link or answer of some sort.

This kinda goes along with the "don't pass along MISINFORMATION" replys...

I think information is always good. I may believe something to be true that is in fact wrong but how will I ever know if I don't talk about it.

I have typed my exact thread title into the search box looking for an old thread of mine and words that I am positive were in it and the search engine couldn't find it.

On another note does anybody know how big of tires I can fit without a lift???
