York Compressor

Well I'm doing my 1UZ swap pretty soon, which uses a serpentine belt. I've also got myself a full size York A/C compressor with a standard belt pulley. Do you guys think it'd be possible to weld/bolt a standard pulley onto the crank pulley and run the york off it, assuming there would be enough room. I realize that getting the pulley centered would be pretty difficult, but I can't see another reason why it wouldn't work.

I've been thinking about this also (don't have the York yet, but was planning on getting one). I was originally thinking custom pulley for one of the accessories, but the problem is the radiator clearance. It really needs to be a longer accessory belt with the unit in line with the other accessories. Tight fit any way you slice it. Problem is where does it go and how to support it?

There were a couple places I was thinking of mounting it. First, having a dual pulley setup where the main belt is serpentine but the outer belt is v-belt type. There are only 3 possible places it could be put (if it could fit).
1) The power steering pump.
2) AC Compressor
3) Top idler pulley.

I don't think it'd be possible to run off the power steering pump due to airbox location, but if you had a modified intake (shot straight out from tb), it might be possible to cram it between the fender well and engine using a short belt.

Second would be the A/C compressor on the opposite side of the engine. Yet again, you would at least need battery location, but that isn't a huge deal since Optima's (what I am currently running) can be mounted in any position. It'd be in the same general area on the opposite side of the engine bay.

Last would be off the idler pulley, in which case you'd mount it on in the same general area of the A/C compressor mount but different belt size/placement.

I've seen the York compressors cocked as much as 45* to the side in Jeep mounts, so it might save some room if you could do that. Best idea would be to just mount it on the fender well and use alot of bracing.

Here is a diagram of the current pulley setup from the lextreme website:

I was also thinking of mounting it in place of the Hydro fan unit and shelling out the 140 bucks for a serpentine pulley/clutch for the york, but i'd rather go the cheap and "easy" route. I'm about 90% sure it wouldn't work in that location.

Give me your thoughts.

I've pretty much decided that I'll be mounting on the right side of the engine bay off the idler or AC pulleys. If I have to, I'll shell out the money to get a serpentine pulley for the york and longer belt.

I need to pick one up to see how physically big these are. I thought there were two sizes. The smaller ones came on Volvos? (or Saabs?) Can't remember - there was big thread on it over at Pirate.

I got mine off a late 70's Volvo, but unfortunately, I can't get measurements because it's out at my farm, an hour away.

Don't let any pictures fool you though, these things are damn big and heavy. It's going to take some big brackets to mount it. The thing probably weighs 15 lbs. If I had to guess, I'd say 6" wide 7" long 12" tall.

Here's a picture I took a while back. The gas can next to it is ~5 gallons.

After some research, the York company says that the compressors can be mounted 90* (horizontally). I drew a diagram for my pump setup which I'll post up here in a little while.

Here's the diagram. Please tell me if you see anything wrong or that I should do differently. Thanks, Eric.

ya, so is there actually realistate to mount a york (in addition to factory a/c as I'd like to keep that);
I was thinking if I can't find a spot to stuff it to run it off the 3.0 I'd look for a 12v motor that had about the right amount of rpm/hp ect and fab something up w/ that.
