Question Where do I weld the third?

Ok, I know im , but I searched for 2 hours straight, but I can not find a picture of a weled third, I just want to know how to weld it and where to weld it, thanks, pleases dont harass me

If you are going to weld a diff to save money and to have it locked I would suggest a spool instead...See bottom of linked page....

Thanks dude, tryed search, I got to get better at it because I end up doing posts like these, but I really dont have 125 to go blow on a spool anyways this is just for trail riding, once it gets home form the trails I swap diffs to an open diff, not that much work. Cheap, easy, and fun!

you swap your diff each time you go out? Whats cheap and easy about that? Ever consider getting a lunch box locker instead?

THat means he will have another stock diff welded(cheap) and It is(EASY) for him to swap them...... and he dont got any money. id spool it, you warp the carier when you weld, however it works the same and is awesome.

No kidding. I'd think the gear oil ALONE would make it cost prohibitive!

Hell, I don't even like changing the wheels over (but then I go 'wheeling about once a week)

Im confused, you have two thirds, or you plan on swapping difs into the same housing?

Everytime you take the differential out you mess with backlash and gear alignment, all of which is critical and IMO no easy "swap".

I think I'm just totally misunderstanding.

swapping 3rds every time you decide to go wheeling will get old quick. I'd either get a lunchbox locker like brad suggested or spend a little more and get a detroit.

It shouldn't mess any of that up....but the problem is, you have to take both rear tires off and take the axle shafts out, then drain all the gear oil, and then take the driveshaft off the diff, take the bolts out of the diff, remove the diff, put the new one in, bolt it in, reattatch the driveshaft, put the axles back in, and line them up with the spider gears in the diff. Put new oil in the diff, put the wheels back on and take it down off the jacks. oh yea, and I don't know about everybody else but to take the axles out of the hosuing I had to disconnect the brake lines too....

Sounds like alot of work to do everytime you wheel, which you must not do often if you're planning on doing it.

Well I dont rock crawl often more prerunning, so I only wheel seriously about 3 times year considering I just got into this stuff.

O btw, a detriot will not work in my truck, the rear is to light and it wont unlock around turns, no point in wasting money, but I have some bad new about the diff, I took it out and inspected it and there was a chipped tooth, I dont know what to do now.

everytime you remove or tamper with teh dif case (unbolt whatever) you mess with the distance between the ring gear and the pinion. the annoying lock nuts on each side of the case adjust that space.

It's no way practical to "swap difs" in any case. It's a full on project even if you've done it a bunch of times. Like bob said even the brakes are involved.

Sure you didnt chip the tooth taking the dif off? did you drop it taking it off not expecting how heavy a 3rd member is? I dropped mine ontop my lap and just about threw my back out. man, no one ever mentions how heavy the 'effer is in any write up, lol.

anyways... new ring and pinion if the tooths chipped otherwise the truck is not safe to drive. the rear end could sieze while your driving if you run it on that ring gear

Well Im not gonna swap diff, thought I'd make you guys get a little pissed before telling you it wasnt reall practicuile, IM gonna keep the welded one, I did it, today and test drove it and drovr it real hard and the welds didnt break at all so Im pretty happy, the chirping isnt so bad, rides pretty smooth, but the funny thing is, is that i did it with a 90 amp mig welder lol, worked perfect, hope it lasts. Thanks for youre guys help.

I'm 100% for welding a 3rd HOWEVER, comma . . .pause for effect . . . if you put a lot of miles on it, youll burn up the rear tires twice as fast <----$$$. If you only wheel occassionally, man up and weld the front and you can get on the Tached Out Off Road forearm workout program. AND not just your right arm either!!!

A three legged yota is still a bad dude.
