Spare Tire Area Gas Tank Ideas!!

This thread is splitting off my thread about my rear bumper, because there obviously needs to be some discussion about it separately. Here's some recent information regarding the rear tank http://www.yotatech.com/showthread.p...&page=7&pp=25:

Here's some pics of the tank:

well, with your design you may not need to. your tank is wider than it is long, so you probably wont feel the effects of moving fluid when you start and stop as much. on sidehills though, a sudden change in motion could easily throw all of that gas to one side of the tank very quickly. its low enough it probably wont cause a roll, but to be safe i would divide the tank into 5 sections.

_____________
| | x | | 'x' marks your fuel pump
|____|___|___|
| | | <---this is the tapered rear part of your tank
|______|_____|

picture this as a top view of your tank. at the bottom of your baffles you only need a 1/2" hole to let the gas flow through.

Man, I'm really having a hard time picturing that, but it could just be me. Let's move this gas tank discussion to another thread, okay, and let's keep this focused on the rear bumper for now.

I gotcha! I'm pretty sure though that my stock fuel pump assembly won't work, because the 8" depth isn't enough. Do you have any other recommendations for fuel pump assembly? I was thinking a simple inline fuel pump and filter, but what do you think? If I did that, where would I put the fuel and return lines?

i would go ahead and use either a round or square bolt on plate to mount the fuel and return lines, that way, if you ever need to remove the tank, you could unbolt it, and you have an easy way to look inside the tank.

what are you doing for a sending unit? i think your best bet its a GM style like summit racing #SUM-290180. it is a 0-90ohm unit, toyotas use a 90-0ohm unit. your guage will read backward, but it will work and be accurate, you could always change your guage letters around and such if it really matters

edit: the sending unit has an 8.5" depth which is the closest i could find for your tank specs, so you could either make a raised mount in the top of the tank, or you could increase the depth by .5"

btw: i read about several guys on PBB who, as soon as they either moved the tank or put it flush with the framerails, subsequently destroyed their rear driveshaft. something to keep in mind though: look how dented up your gas tank skid is and imagine if those were to happen to the thin wall tube of your d-shaft!! the best solution is have it retubed with 3/16" (.188") wall
