So I was under my truck today

I was changing all the fluids in my 81 yota pickup today, and I looked up and saw something that caught my eye. I have had frame rotted out before, but it is only the box in (yellow arrow) So I welded in a plate ( Red )arrow.

I peeled away undercoating and saw this on the bottom

So I look to the driver side at the same spot

So guess next free time will be into welding some 1/4in steel for support. But ill take suggestions

oooh... that frame probably isnt a happy camper... you could weld in some support, or just hit up your local roadsign companies.. im sure theyd give you some street sign post material you can build a new frame

Too bad you aren't in Oregon, I think you could get this frame pretty cheap:

Good luck with the repairs, I feel lucky about the frame on my '81, though not so thrilled with my floor pan

You dont even want to know about the floors. I drove it home an hour and half without even looking at the truck b4 hand, pulled up the carpet and saw the ground. When i took out the seat, i almost cried. Ive done the floors since. Tommorrow im goin to get some 1/4 in flat stock and gonna start doing some welding. And DARE44.......that is some funny stuff , but some1 should be shot 4 doing that to a toyota

Good news, I just got done pressure washing the frame, then the truck(got a little carried away) and I didnt find any more cracks. I did see some places that could use reinforcement from the factory. Anyone that knows more about 1st gen truck frames and weak points, let me know. Going to start prepping tomorrow and getting the steel Wednesday. Thank you

hey are u using a mig welder? And are u a welder, because welding the frame on a vehicle is definately not something u should do if u never done it before? i ve been a welder for years and i still would consider getting a pro to do it. i am just wondering?

Ive done welding before, but I learned that overhead welding, is a totally different ball game. My welder was having an issue 2. So I know it isnt the prettiest, but it will hold. You can actually see where I started the project and where I ended. By the last 2 plates I had it down pat. so i ground a lot off this one, which was the first and re-welded. IT all turned out pretty good. have pics tomorrow
