Cool My 2nd Gen 4Runner Buildup. Birth of a RocRunnr

Well it’s time to start cutting up my 4Runner.

Phase One (Time Frame: immediately - shooting to be finished by end of Nov. to middle of Dec.):
- SAS using 84 axle, pieced together Marlin Crawler kit & a custom rear leaf pack.
- Front HP E-Locker and Rear LP E-Locker.
- R150 5 Speed swap & dual transmission setup using w56 and Gear T-Case.
- 15x8 Cragar Black Stealies & 35x12.5.15 MTR's
- 30 Spline Longfield Chromoly Super Birfs and Inner Axles (I have a lead foot)
- Hydro Steering Assist - From my research I’ve found that this can be done for around $100.00 and can be made to work without a delay. Keep watch I’ll have part #'s and a write up.

Phase Two (Time Frame: First Quarter of 2006):
- Rear Leaf Spring Swap
- Rear FROR Floater Kit

Phase Three (Time Frame: Secound to Third Quarter of 2006):
- 3.4 (5VZFE) Swap. If my 3.0 takes a dump this’ll happen soon.
- Custom Winch Bumper and a Warn winch to go along with it.
- Bob Rear End 12-16 inches
- Full Exo-Cage.

Things that’ll happen between the other stuff.
- There are other things that I can’t think of right now.

This is what the 4Runner looked like when I got it.

This is what it looked like with the BJ Lift, 33 BFG Mud's and Cruiser Coils.

This is what it’ll some what look like after phase one.

I look forward to sharing my build with everyone and look forward to your comments (good OR bad).

Looks like a good plan . I'm happy with my e-lockers & front &rear leafs . Go hi-pinion in the front if you can . I really liked Bigrocks off roads 4runner too , he built my shock hoops . Daryl

Talking Answers to Questions I see asked on others buildups.

Here are some answers to questions I see asked on others buildups.

Q. Why a SAS you ask?

A. With the money I’ve spent on CV axles and the IFS lift I could have put a LARGE dent in the cost of a SAS by now. That’s not even counting the time, blood, sweat, and tears that I’ve put into the stock suspension.

If you ask me should I do a SAS or work with the stock suspension? I’d say if you think you’ll ever use the strength and articulation that a SAS will give then do the SAS and don’t mess around wasting money on the stock suspension.

Q. Why E-Lockers and not an ARB Air Locker or some other Locker?

A. Well to be blunt, I trust Toyota Parts so I wouldn’t have it any other way “E-Lockers are Bling Bling”! Plus I like the feeling that I’m not relying on an air compressor to keep me locked. If the E-Locker motor goes out I can manually lock the locker. Just remember KISS “Keep it Simply Silly”!

I was planning to go HP in the front but I got a KILLER deal on 2 very low mileage LP E-Lockers so for now I’m going to use them and in the future when I have the cash laying around to buy a new HP E-Locker I’ll get one because I cant find a used one for less than $600.00+.

Do you have any pictures of your rig?

Nice rig and rigs! Do you find it a benefit in running a cruisier axle?

Ya the cruizer axle is wider (63.5") & the birfields bigger & stronger .

Can't wait for pics of the build. Quick question. With the bobbing of the rear, are you going to keep in all enclosed, or do like 4Hummer, I think, did it and take the back part of the roof out where the windows are?

I'd make sure the Longfields and inner axle upgrade comes pretty close to Phase 1 if not a part of it...cause I've seen you drive and you'll grenade a birf and/or tear up an inner and you don't wanna mess up your lockers right off the bat.

Looks promising...

I’m going to keep it enclosed. The rear most windows will not be there anymore. It’ll be sheet metal.

I’ve been thinking about it and well today I sold some stuff so now all I have to do is give Mr. Long a call.

Thanks Will,

I’m excited, I cant wait for the cutting to begin . It’s been a lot of fun coming up with all the $$$$ to do it but I finally have lots of $$$$ to spend on the SAS and I’m ready to begin cutting.

I plan to keep track of the money spent so people will know what it really cost to SAS a 1st or 2nd Gen.

The fun begins this weekend with tearing apart the axle and rebuilding it.

Let the good times roll.

You guys think 30 Spline Longfield Chromoly Super Set Birfs and Inner Axles will work. We'll just have to wait and see.

Here are a few pictures of the 84 axle still under the truck. The guy wouldn’t sell me just the axle; I had to buy the truck. Just what I needed another yard ornament!

The good news is the frame might be going under 82Trekkers Formula Toy rig. I haven’t had time to look the frame over yet to see if it’s in sound condition.

And one of the donor beast. It had a good life and its parts will live on.
