Mine is about 3.5-4" forward. I say for this application more is better, for sure. Better approach angle, firewall clearance, and I wanted my wheel base as close to 110 as possible. I'm at 108 on a regular cab 84.

Depends on what he did to move it forward. Did he jimmy rig it and have it put forward in an unsafe manner?

I don't feel 5" is too much. I say that might be perfect. Im not sure how far mine moved forward, but it did a little bit over stock.

It depends on what you are looking at. Assuming crossover steering on the truck, the 1st limit you'll hit is the tie rod will hit the drag link. So for that you move the steering box forward. Then the next limit you will hit with the steering box is the front body mount, I had to notch mine out a little:

But if you are not averse to hacking that body mount out, then you can move the steering box farther forward.

After that, then the limit is what springs you are running and how long the front and rear halves are. If you go with longer springs or push too far forward, the front hanger will have to extend in front of the frame and then you sort of end up defeating one of the advantages of moving the axle forward (better approach angle).

I have stock rears up front with 3/4" forward relocated hanger on my '85.
