latch - swing away tire carrier
Hey folks,
Ok so I admit it, I'm working slightly backwards here... Building a rear bumper with swing away tire carrier: ![]() I'm pondering how to latch it, so that it's not going to rattle... Had a few different pin / screw type ideas - but not overly thrilled by any of them... Anyone have any genius ideas they'd care to share? |

the only thing i can think of is drill a hole at the one end and fill the area inside but leave a hole for the pin to go through and put a hole in the bumper for the pin to go into. thats all i can think of without going overboard.

Lot's of good latches here:
http://www.carrlane.com/index.cfm And for some reason I had this particular section bookmarked: http://www.mcmaster.com/nav/enter.as...pe=&catnum=113 Just have to search a bit for other builds and see what works. Don't underestimate the amount of stress this latch will be under and go as big as possible. Something that is adjustable will also be important so you can keep it tight over time. ![]()

How secure a latch are you looking for?
You could try a turn-buckle/hasp type unit a lever lock thing like the above poster you could probably rig a padlock for that.

Don't need a way to padlock it...
Love the carrlane latch toggles http://www.carrlane.com/Catalog/inde...3C3B285351415A Except for one thing... I know I'll peel the latch off the first time I go wheeling; if not peeling it off, It'll become tree fodder (and i'm guessing likely to release if it does - unless I actually do buy the carrlane with the safety... Just don't think I want to ask how much that'll cost). Am I insane, am I making a mountain outta a 1 in 100 (not thinking so, last 3 wheeling trips I bent the old bumper's corners)? I'm thinking a vertical mount if it matters, either on the side or rear face... |

i used a sprung loaded shute bolt normally for garden gates only cost a couple of quid to lock it shut but i did make the tyre carrier have a drop down arm so it makes it a lot easyer to remove, just pull the pin and the tyrer drops down

It would be cool to see someone use butterfly latches (The kind that are on road cases)

That's actually a pair of 1" bore pillow block bearings; with a 1" keyed shaft as the pivot. If I was to do it again, I think i'd go with 1 1/4" shaft and may still yet...
Still slowly muddling away on this - currently I'm using a 3/4" coarse thread bolt to latch it down (spring loaded). It's a bit of a theft deterrent - if you don't have the 1 1/8" wrench (or impact) - you're not getting in ![]() |
