gave my truck a trim

Metal was getting long and rusty so I decided to do some trimming today.

My buddy RJ came over and helped out on it.
We kind of rigged my 1000watt inverter up with some jumper cables off his blazer and went to cuttting with my sawzall.

I removed the front valence and trimmed the front fenders to fit my 36's.
I will be adding a Class III receiver to the front right between the frame rails and trimming the front bumper some so I can fit a mulitmount winch.

I will trim the back of the fender as necessary when I get the 36's.

I also trimmed a portion of the bed to reveal a crap load of rust on the bed. Well I can't afford a new bed yet I will likely cut out a good portion of rust and repair it with some aluminium or some peices of metal either welded in or riveted in for now.

The bed will be also bobbed with about 13" removed from it. So I am not done yet with it.

Looks good...but why not just take the whole bed off and just tube it? And I thought you gave that awesome roll bar away? I remember seeing tons of those in the 80s when I was in high school, most of the same guys now have nice "rust bucket" roll bars cause they are still driving the same rig working at the Burger King!

Well slight problem not alot of money left to do it so I figured I would use what I have for now until I can afford to do it.
Also I need front springs now the left front spring has a broken leaf.

I trimmed some more tonight.
Man this bed is looking real bad on the drivers side. Everytime I sawzall more bondo comes flying off that side of the bed.
I get to use my buddy's grinder so tomorrow I should be able to clean some of it up and use some tin and a rivet gun to kinda patch things up.
I may use some tigerhair fiberglass to cover some stuff up since I have all the stuff to do it.

No unfortuately just the pics with the 35's.

I haven't had time to do anything else to my truck. My wife works 4 nights a week and I have 3 kids 2 that are preschool so I have to watch them during the day so no time to work on the truck. I maybe able to get a sitter and start working on it tomorrow though.

I had time to do a little shopping called the steel places they all wanted way too much for a sheet of steel.
So I called a metal place that fabricates ducting for ventalation systems out of galvinized steel.
They hooked me up with a piece of .026 5'x5' for $15.
It should work pretty good since I am riveting it on and not welding it.

Do you need to keep the bed? Why not just scrap the whole thing and just flatbed it?

I am removing my roll pan when I get a chance. Unfortunately haven't had a chance to do anything again today.
My Wife worked again last night and this morning was called into her other job at the Fitness club to be the Manager on duty. She just barely got home at 1 pm and has to work again tonight at 9pm so she is sleeping again.

I undid all the bolts to the bed and it is going to the scrap yard tomorrow.

Flatbed Time

flatbed that toyota and run some long travel shocks vertical up through it...you can pick up flatbed kits fairly cheap, and there are plenty of custom designs with directions on PBB, check it out...
here's one example:

if you dont have the cash for a full on flatbed right now, just get a big tool box to go behind the cab and strap down the spare tire to the frame. it will get you by untill you decide what kind of flatbed you really want

The old bed was dropped at the metal scrap yard today.
I don't have pics of it bare but let me tell you with no weight on the back the rear springs are real stiff definately felt the bumps on the way home.

Also something else kind of funny happened on the way there.
I hit a large bump it was enough to make the front of the rusty old cat converter brake right at the front of the pipe.
It was loud as hell going there I think it was louder than a semi. I think it was quite anoying to other motorists. I kinda chuckled all the way there and back.

I have a 2 1/4 univerisal cat already on order and have a thrush cherry bomb to fix the exhaust.

As far as replacing the bed I want to put something on there sometime but first I am going to wire brush the frame back there before I begin anything.
The frame doesn't have much rust it is more dirty than anything else on the inside frame rails were coated with gear oil to because of the previous bad pinion seal so they are all caked with oil and dirt that rubs off on your hands.
So once I get the frame degreased I am going to sand and paint it .

BTW I love my 1000 Watt xantrex power inverter it is enough to power my grinder also the 6.5 amp sawzall.
That's all I was using when I started to bob the bed.
