Ford 302/351 swap info

Will a 351 FI fit in a 87 4Runner? How much bigger is it to a 302?

they are virtually the same. 351W vs 302, only difference really is deck height and front accessories

its about 1" wider up top and 1" higher, thus many mustang with this swap just need dropped motor mounts to fit under stock hood.

Blocks are much better...hold 700-800rwhp reliably versus the stock roller 302 holding roughly 500rwhpish

hope this helps

im guessing they had TTB (Dana 44's but not SFA) axles unless you get a 351 out of a f250. TTB starting from 79+ I believe.

I dunno...but we put a stroked 351W (balanced and blueprinted, all bolt-ons) in my friends '65 fastback, with 4.56 locked rear end, and it HAULS.

im goina do this... i just need to finish up school (done in march) get a job (hopefully march) and start buyin the parts... hello 351...

I am interested in what the f250/350 4wds had for axles... thinkin bout usin them for the runner.... fords a left or right drop.

nother thing that crossed my mind... think i could take a full size front axle, narrow it only on the long side, enough to center the diff and be the width of a runner for rear steer while im at it?

hello the never ending hole in the mud into which i pour money

ok, 79 was the last year of the solid axle front end in your f100's, the f250's were still soild axle the axles were dana 44 in the front and ford 9inch in the rear.the f350's depending on if it was desil or gas, the gas still used the same axles as the 250's, but the desils used dana 60's in the front and either a 9in or a corperate 14 rear. trannys were c6 all the way up to the early 90's, but they also used a aod, c4 and another that i cant remember but the aod is a good tranny if you have it built this tranny is fords answer to chevys 700r, your c6 comes in 2 bell houseing big block and small block, so pay attension to what you buy. as far as the 351w goes, i have a ford bronco that has a built351w in it and it was dynoed at 625hp. that sumbitch hauls ass.. lock it in 4 low and it is unstopable..

IMO you need to set some goals if you are serious about this

-what is it being used for? Mud, rock trails?
-how much power do you want?
-what is a realistic budget?

These make it much easier. IMO I would simply just get a used stock mustang 302 roller (HO) FI engine out of a fox body complete for like $500ish and go from there. They came with forged internals and can be pushed to 600rwhp if neccessary, parts are overflowing out of every corner of the market, technology is booming for it etc. It is a relatively light and compact engine as well. Get one, slap a 8psi supercharger kit on and you can have a reliably 400hp engine no problem for relatively cheap, get good fuel economy, be docile as well.

if you got a 351, you could stroke it to 408+, but again, parts are much more money, do you really need 700hp?

Im still swaying back and forth between the 302 and 351.... its goina be one of those. 300RWHP would be more than enough for me. it all just kinda depends what i come across first cheap, 302 or 351.

Correction on the trannies... 89 F250 2WD had a E4OD... but i dont know if you could get it in a 4wd... I havent figured out what axles im goina wind up usin yet... but im leaning towards non-toyota. still thinkin bout narrowing a wide front to use for rear steer... but the more i look at different front axles, the more i think its not possible.
