E-locker Retrofit

My truck did not come with an e-locker stock. In spring of 2004 I swapped a complete axle out of a 1999 limited that was rolled. In spring of 2005 I had the truck aligned after putting on new tires and the alignment shop notified me that they thought my rear axle was bent. The drivers side was almost 1" farther forwad than the pass side.

Anyways, a used e-locker axle tube runs $300-$400. I found a non-elocker for $100 (drum to drum, just no 3rd) from aLostDawg. Once I found a local welder I trusted I decided to take the plunge and convert the non-elocker. Here are some pics.

Got penatration?

The only issue I had with the conversion was one stud that was a little crooked caused issues getting the 3rd in place. But with a little force we finally got it in.

While we were at it I decided to add some diff armor. I was thinking the all-pro style would be easy to build. However, Josh (Bad Monkey) came up with an idea using 2" tubing. I really like the results. It should provide great protection and it looks cool too.

Since that went so well we also decided to build an e-locker skid too.

The only problem with this was when I went to put the diff in place the angled piece stuck out too far and I had to trim it from hitting the gas tank skid. Not a big deal.

This was a long 12 hour day, but I am glad it is done. Josh and Arnold, thanks for your innovative ideas and fabrication skills.

I'll post some more pics after I get it all painted.

Nice work jim! I just added a diff guard to the front of my 85 axle. Just used a 8" pipe cap and cut it in 2.

I will be making the e-locker retrofit into the front diff on mine this weekend!

man, sometimes common sense just escapes me. i've been looking for a bare e-locker equipped rear axle just like you. this is definitely the better, cheaper and easier solution

Anyone ever put the e-locker third in an 84-85 front axle? Would this work (with fitting as above)?

It will fit the same as the rear. I am retrofitting my front for it now. Should have some pictures of it up in the next week or so.
