Designing a bumper. Have questions.

Hi everyone. I have a 95 4runner which I've owned since it rolled off the factory. This truck has been rock solid for me, other than a head gasket it has been pretty much trouble free. I love being outdoors, camping, fishing and want a truck that will take me where I want to go. I owned an 83 CJ which I used to use as my offroad vehicle. That Jeep thing they talk about...I do understand. That's why I got rid of it and kept the Toyota. After all these years I've decided to make my truck a little more reliable in the bush so I've decided to do a few upgrades.

The only major mods I plan on doing are mods that will get me out of trouble and not in trouble so big tires and suspension are out...for now I am in the process of designing a winch bumper and I have a question about mounting. I found 8 spots I can bolt the bumper to. All mounting points are threaded which I guess is an added bonus. See attached. First question. Is that going to be enough places to bolt. I don't see anywhere else I can bolt it to. The second question is where can I get the bolts. The existing bolts will be too short. I'm looking for fine metric thread, not sure what the sizes are so if some one can let me know that would be great. I've tried Brafasco, Fastenal, and a couple of local car shops and no one seems to have the bolts. I havent tried the dealer but I would be surpised if they would have longer bolts in the size I need. I imagine they exist since there are tonnes of 2nd gen owners who have tackled this project before

I'm itching to get this done in the next couple of weeks. Of course pics will follow.

Oh one other thing. Anyone from the Toronto area who has a similar truck and give me tips and tricks future mods?

Thanks,
G

I've always gone to True Value Hardware for my metric needs they always seem to have metric and standard fine threads and some other odd-ball stuff you can't find at Home Depot or Lowes. You may also want to try the internet hardware sites. http://www1.mscdirect.com/cgi/nnsrhm or www.Mcmastercarr.com

Welcome to YotaTech! Those are the appropriate locations to mount a winch bumper for your model 4Runner. The bolt size you need are M12 x 1.25. Best of luck.

Thanks Malta,

The two bolts in the front are a different size that those on the side. What is the size of the bolts on the sides (assuming you gave me the size for the front bolts)

Aftermarket bumpers from Marlincrawler.com, 4xinnovations.com, allprooffroad.com, addictedoffroad.com, and trail-gear.com all attach by using those 8 locations. See pics...

Welcome to YT and good luck with your design.

Fastenal can get them, just will have to order them - that's where I usually get mine. BE SURE TO GET GRADE 10.9!

Note that M12x1.25 is a good size bolt to have around - it's also the size for replacing the 6 studs that hold the CV to the stub axle, the crossmembers, and the brake calipers!

If you go up under the front where you have circled the two threaded bolt holds and in a bit farther to the middle you will find a set of holes you can add 4 more bolts (2 per side) to and then you will have 12 points to bolt to.

I did mine like that and it is pretty rock solid and you can add your winch with out worrying about it pulling the bumper off.
