Changing out CV boots the hard way.
The hard way...
Just picked up this front axle from an 85 Pickup this week that was being parted out at my local shop (ProTrux). It's got stock 4.10's and its pretty immaculate except for the 20 years of gunk.
I started to take all the extra stuff off of it tonight. Next week Ill start to take it down all the way to check the nuckles, axles and clean the mother up and paint it.
I'll probably have enough cash for the All-Pro SAS kit at the end of June.
I'll have a local shop weld the hangers nice n square while the IFS is still on. Then I'll start hacking, grinding and switching out calipers and rotors. Once the axle is hung, I'll rig up the steering. For the shock hoops and steering stabilizer I'll have a buddy cruise over with his welder to weld em on after the flex is checked. For the driveshaft I'll probably use the All-Pro spline kit with the IFS driveshaft. If anyone wants to cruise over and play, more the merrier!
For the rear lift.. for now... I'll use the All pro coil spacers with the All-Pro springs I already have for about 4" of lift matching the front 4" lift. I will also raise the panhard accordingly.
Next year I'll install rear leaf springs, front EZ locker, Profields and regear to 4.88 with 33x12.5's
Phartruck here I come

Sweet.....us IFSers will be sad to see you go. It was pretty capable as is. BUt I understand your reasons. That will be a sick looking truck when you're done.
why rear leafs??? Is it too complicated to do the coil thing with 4" of lift?

I don't see any CV's??
Sounds like you have a good plan to limit the time your truck is out of comission. Your truck is gonna look sweet.
Seems like only yesterday you were winching up hanglider hill after getting nowhere fast.

the new 30 spline Longfields are just as strong as a 30 spline D60. I doubt you'll ever be able to break them, Out at the Toyota Jamboree, I got to see them in action and Bobby had his axle testing maching. I have videos showing just how much stress it takes to snap them. Marlin has a very nice SAS kit and will soon be comming out with a universal 6 stud knuckle to go along with his new 6 stud high steer billet arms.

Got any info/links on this new knuckle from Marlin? I take it "universal" means it fits left and right?

Alrighty, At this point I have the axle complete except for the calipers, which are still on my truck. I cleaned the thing up, replaced the bearings, seals, gaskets, rotors steering arms, and painted the knuckle and housing. It's all greased and oiled up ready to go. I'm holding off on a locker and gears for now since I'm short on cash but an ez locker is in the works eventually.
Next on my list is getting the hangers and having them welded on. Then the fun really begins...
Here are some pics I took about a week ago with the axle dissasembled
Seals, gaskets, bearings & brakelines from Marlin
New inner seal
Dust cover with Crown SS brakeline
All grinded and painted pp
It put the solvent on its skin or else it gets the grease again
