Bandit Runner's 3rd Gen Rear Bumper Build
#41
I was wondering if you had any drawings with dimensions and measurments? Also wondering if you had made up a material list. Love your design and work. Backed into a tree last week with my 4runner pulling a buddy out and and need to build a bumper for mine now. Any help would be apprciated.
Thanks

Got some work done this weekend even though I was freezing. Working in a non-heated 25 degree garage can get old fast, but I still got quite a bit completed. There was a lot of cutting, grinding, filing, and sanding all weekend long. Basically, I have all the main structural pieces ready to be welded together.
Just a pile of random parts?

Just curious where you got the recovery anchor pieces from? The look like a purchased part. I am wondering because I am looking to build my own bumper for my 84 Pickup crawler and I definatly dont have as much skill as you. I was just going to use a 2x4 structural tube, weld on caps and weld on the anchor points.

Yea shackle mounts. I did a quick search after posting that and yea I can buy them. I might make my own as well though depending on the steel I get for the bumper frame mounts. I am still in the very preliminary process of design (brainstorming).

So here is a dumb/simple question, but how did you cut out the notches for the shackle mounts? Just using an angle grinder?

Looking good, I just read through this thread, the sliders, and the drawer box thread, you did and are doing are really good job. I really like it all, I think it is really interesting to see you talk about how much you suck at welding in your slider thread but here you seem to be a pro at it...a couple years of welding changes everything huh? lmao! Keep up the amazing work!

Pretty amazing builds on the bumpers. I have a rear bumper to make myself... Just need to learn to weld. Which welder do you have, if you dont mind me asking? I was thinking of picking up a Lincoln 180c.

Got some work done on the bumper this weekend. First I assembled it to the truck for one last test fitment. There were no major issues, everything fit fine. Then I cut out some rubber for the mudflaps.
Pics of passenger side mudflap:
Then I took it back off the truck, and did the very last bit of welding on it. It feels good to pass that milestone. Then I started to grind down all the corners/seams. This took a long time, but I got them all nice and smooth.
Pic of how it sits now:
Still need to clean up some weld splatter on the inside surfaces. Then I need to epoxy the light bezels in place. Then final cleanup and paint. I am really anxious to get this thing done.
Also, I just ordered some new 35" MTZ's, so those will be going on soon too. Can't wait!

Quick update: I haven't had much time to work on this lately, but the other day I finally finished grinding and sanding all of the corners nice and smooth. Then I cleaned and degreased it real good. I was also able to epoxy in the light bezels. Next time you see it, it will be painted.
