87 toyota rear end swap. Now I have axle wrap!

Hey guys I need some help I snap my axle in my 87 Toyota pickup and it was cheaper for me to just buy a whole new rear end. So I just got done with a swap and now I have axle wrap did I do something wrong? How do I fix this

Axle wrap how do ya know?? What are your symptoms??

Spring center bolts good? U bolts properly tightened?

If all you did is change rear ends onto the same springs you had before, there should be no difference.

Yes tell us just what old parts you might have reused .

Just what you did in fact

You broke a axle?? not the axle housing ??

and it was easier to swap in a complete axle housing

So you now have a differential that might have enough slop it feels like axle wrap

If you do indeed have axle wrap after installing new ubolts torqued correct making sure the spring center bolt is in good shape

One needs to resort to the muscle car fix

So I removed all of the old parts and my symptoms are a clunk when I first start to move and if I look underneath the truck I can see the Leafs separating when that clunk happens and the axle is moving up at the same time tomorrow I'm going to remove the u-bolts and make sure they're all tighten down the same torque

Yes I just snapped and axle and luckily I was really close to my house so I just put it in 4-wheel drive and drove back and it was cheaper to buy a whole rear end then to buy a new axle. This rear end came out of in 83 four wheel drive pickup which I was told would match up

You have checked the your swapped in axle has the same gear ratio as your old one ??

You are using new ubolts not reusing old ones??

Do you have old worn out or broken springs ??

Solid axle trucks and IFS trucks axle widths are not the same. If I recall right a solid axle trucks axles are narrower. Should not really matter as far as axle wrap but to make you aware of the differences.

yep Terry is correct, the 83 axle is 1.5" narrower on each side than an IFS rear axle...depending on wheel offset your tires may be hitting the spring.

it is recommended that you use new u-bolts on any axle swap...u-bolts stretch.

how do you know that the 83 years match your front gears (Assuming you have a 4x4)? Did you inspect the third member and are confindent it is in good shape? a 34+ year old differential could have issues. Pinion bearing etc could be crap...

So when I took it apart my Center leaf spring Bolt was a little bit loose and I could move my leaf so I tightened it up and now it seems like it's okay I'm going to take it for a test drive I'll let you know what happens

So I took my truck for a test drive and the whole rear end was completely locking up randomly I had to put it in reverse to be able to drive forward again because the whole rear end was bound up you guys have any ideas about what that could be

Time to take rear axle apart, sometimes used parts have problems. Like previously mentioned. Many recyclers have warranties.

You did at least change the mixture of gear oil and water .

No way to tell how long this was sitting .

Perhaps enough rust broke loose it locks the gears at times.

This complete rear axle swap was easier and cheaper then changing a axle I guess your going to find out

We all learn lessons some are just more expensive then others

I'm going back to what someone else already posted. Are the gear ratios the same as your front axle? If they're not then that could be a huge problem.
