I will stop complaining about my 22R. I died on the way home from Miners.
The party is over, the original 1981 22R with 300,000K is DEAD. It ran a bit weird out there, but ran the trail fine. Then on the way back it started back firing with too much throttle, so I eased in to Mesa amazed I made it that far and then on to Tempe. Going up Rural I know it was only running on 2 cylinders or so.
Sucks, but I can't say I did not see it coming. Now I just have to figure out what new engine to get, a 3.4 would be nice, but requires alot of new parts like a Transmission. An LC engine seems to make sense, but that are alot of money. But that has never really stopped me in he past, this buggy is the biggest money pit ever, what's a little more. The buggy works really well and the only crummy thing left on it was that motor. Now that will be gone too.

I don't really have time to re-build it, I really don't have time to swap it out, but I will make time. This is the one I have had my eye on.

I bought a 3.4 engine/5spd tranny with all the other stuff for $1300...if you are going to replace it...might as well upgrade.

That Ebay link doesn't seem like a bad price considering everything they list on the site. Hard to tell what the quality of the parts they use are though. {edit} I would insist that brand new headbolts are installed. I already told you my story...
My opinion (like it matters...) after seeing the buggy in action a couple times is to stick with a lightweight engine like the 22. It seems like a huge advantage. Obviously you don't need additional horsepower. Personally I'd lean toward a fuel injected R/E, but that would interfere with your preference to run propane. Great trip yesterday - glad you made it back. How long did it take to de-thaw your boy?

What about an older toyota diesel then run it off vegetable oil. I wonder if you can use propane injection on that (bbq and french fries on the trail
)

Wheel for the morning on propane. BBQ for lunch and put the extra oil in a secondary tank. Burn the oil home. That's pretty close to perpetual motion. ![]()

The buggy has a brand new Marlin L52HD tranny, so I would rather just get another 22R. One that works and is not all ragged out with 300K on it should be fine for a 3400 pound vehicle.
The fact that Westall and Koch can blow by me on the freeway leads me to believe that old motor was in really sad shape. With a truck that light and 5.29's it should have alot more power. I'll just get another 22R, it seems to work extremely well with that motor.

You just need another 22r like you have been saying for awhile now. Keep it simple and get it back on the trail. I am betting with a rebuilt 22r you will notice a significant power increase.
A 3.4 or 2.7 would be cool but on the trail I dont know if it would be worth all the extra money and hassle to swap, rewire, new tranny, adapter, etc etc...if it was a street/trail rig then yes it would be worth it since street driving would be a huge benefit. You want more power...talk to Cary about his turbo'd 22r propane buggy!

Sorry it finally went, but we knew it was coming.
Get the 22r and I will come out for a weekend.

I bought the engine on eBay, I called them and they said the only thing you can do to the older 22R engines is put the RV cam in with bigger valves.
I also stuck with an 81 as it has the double chain with the steel guides. They are also going to try to find me a re-man distributor. I should be good to go then. The motor and distributor would be the last of the old worn out crap. I'll keep the propane and the Marlin tranny and just fix what is broken. It's time to wheel this thing, I have spent enough time building it.

I've got kind of a weird work schedule coming up here for the next few months, but if you need a hand with the swap... let me know as well.
