Thumbs up I need some help, 4runners hurt.

I think I need a third member quick.

There is a lot of friction in the rear end. It sounds and feels (vibration is shakes the whole car) like it is in the rear diff.
At just a couple miles an hour its harsh enough to halt the car and make a squeeking noise.
It would come on every couple of feet. About every revoltion of the tires.
The car will roll fine at idle speed in drive for a couple feet and then the rear end will bind up and bring it to a halt. I can overcome it by applying a little gas, but it doesn't feel good!
I rolled back and forth, in high 2wd, 4wd, low 4wd, center diff locked and unlocked and it does it in every scenario.

The weird part: after a bit I gave it some gas, okay a but much, and it stopped. Completely. No more grinding, no more noise, or vibration. No leaks even at the time.
Now today a leak has developed where the pumpkin bolts together.

All in all, its obviously not good. I need a new third member. Preferably elocked while I'm replacing it, but I'll take anything. This is my daily driver and I need to get to work.

Sorry to hear this problem is still occurring.

I assume you are in Phoenix... or are you hung up in Tucson still?

Is there anyway it's anything to do with your brakes?

What about this idea. Pull your rear DS completely. Engage 4WD and see if things are still binding . Might give you another clue as to the source with zero engine load on the rear axle.

Just brainstorming.

By the way... I have a V6 3rd from my '90 with 4.56 gears sitting in my garage. If it will fit, and work for you... you are welcome to borrow it for a while.

Tim - check your PM's...and if you dont get over to TTORA soon check into this -

http://phoenix.craigslist.org/pts/532803138.html

Non-elocked 3rd gen 4runners have the regular Toy V6 8" diff.

I made it back from Tucson somehow. Did about 45 and I'd stop to check the rear diff a lot. It was hotter than I've felt it, but I just tightened a couple of the bolts and kept going...

Thanks westy. LM for him. "sonoran fabrication" was the number on the add.
Hmm. Is it Steve S evil twin...
Elvota, seems to just be in the axle. I got under there and turned the wheels with the axle off the ground. Its very quite now. Almost like I sheered teeth before and now it is just clunking waiting to fail... ?

Well... it looks like my 4.56 V6 diff I have would work on your 4Runner if the E-locker on CL falls through.

Let me know and I can bring it over so you don't have to put any more miles on your time bomb.

Really! I wasn't totally sure it would. I guess as long as I was in 2wd it would work.
I'll do some searching/calling today and tonight to see what I can come up with and that may be the way to go.

Tim, check your mailbox.

I wonder though if this had something to do with it?

Most likely the ratio won't do for 4WD, but in 2WD things should be fine. Do you have any idea what ratio your truck has now?

Actually... I wonder with auto hubs and the front diff is spinning all the time that a different rear ratio in the rear would cause problems?

If we can't be sure, we could pull the front DS to be safe. That would eliminate the possibility of the transfer case being "fed" 2 different ratios from the front and rear axles.

Maybe someone will chime in.

Tim,

are you running an extended rear diff breather? Maybe sucked some river muck in somehow with that crossing.

You should be running 4.10s. E-locked is 4.30s

T, I'm not responding to you. That photo is photoshoped. I would never do that! haha! Just kidding.

Zona,
I do have an extended breather. I still may have sucked some in though.

It has 4.10's by the vin # chart I've looked up before.

I've got some parts ordered. There will be a few fun nights taking the front and rear diff out.
I really want to get it up and running again soon...

I think we did pretty good: he pulled in the garage at 6pm and we had them both out by 8:15 or so.
