OK. Looking for tips on removing the Pitman arm. I already broke Autozones puller.

Puller from OTC or you need to get a junk yard box where you can get the arm off.

I have had some boxes where I had to use the 20 ton press to get the arm free. Obviously pull the box and 20 ton press it.

If you get one from a yard, go for 89-95 as it is a bigger box. Steering shaft will have to be modified but that is not hard.

See why making it "my" problem is much easier. For you, not me.

Thanks Steve. OTC makes several. Do you mean the conical one?

Pitman Arm Puller OTC7311

Also keep in mind we really need to get this through my place before Jan 1 or it will wind up on the back burner during the busy time.

So don't loose the eye of the tiger. Get the thing movable and bring it back. It's a lot of work, I know. A 3rd Gen 4Runner is 100X more.

Just brainstorming.... but what about an angle grinder to the body of the current arm? Might cut a few deep slots and help relieve the pressure. Would be difficult not to go all the way down to the splines... but if you are looking at getting a new box anyway you don't have much to loose.

And what's left of the Downey truss as well as the OEM front crossmember.

If anyone ever asks if you wheeled your 4Runner before the SAS...

... that picture is worth a thousand words.

Nice - I need to wheel mine with IFS a little longer until I break somethin, before I can justify spending the $ going the same route. But I have no doubts it will happen eventually, the more I see this being done the more I wanna be SAS myself

I purchased that Downey IFS truss then regretted that decision 2 months later when I went to install it and it was 1/2" or more to long. Removing my Diff Drop and going for the Sonoran Steel one once I've put some new tires on the old girl.

When I did my SAS I had to use the puller to put as much tension as you can on the pitman and give it some healthy whacks with a sledge on the arm. It popped right off after about five whacks.

That did it. Thanks. A few more than 5 whacks though. Need a BFH smiley.

Don't most people typically tack the front hanger on before fully welding so that they can check the shackle angle?

The welder (Sonoran Steel) has done a few before including mine so he had a reference for where the hanger goes in relation to the SAS kits that are out there.

Mine before SAS:

IMO, one can't really move the hanger to much fore and aft without having to really start fabricating. I think most SAS kits are designed for the hanger to basically line up with the front of the frame and the rear shackle hangers to fit right between the body mount.

Well I think I'm getting pretty close to hanging the biotch. Could use some extra hands for that if there is any interest.
I've also gotta come up with a way to get the entire truck up higher.
BTW already sold some of the old stuff. Hunnert dolla, yeah!! (might go straight into a better floorjack)

I have some big blocks of wood and some jack stands that were plenty tall enough for me. If you like, you can borrow them when you return the snap ring pliers.

I am sure you realize this already, but once you get the axle in place you can move your jack stands there and off the frame which will give you plenty of height for the rest of the project.

I think I'll take you up on that. Will they the blocks fit in the car? That was part of my thinking as well, I'd go get some wood to stack up, but I don't have my truck!!

Then I have to decide if I'll have Home Depot cut it at the store, but that bothers me on a very fundamental basis...

On another note, where is eveyone placing their jackstands? I realized last night when I went to install the springs that mine were right in the line of the springs. So... I moved them behind the rear shackle point on the frame with the floor jack up to the front hanger. I let the floor jack down 1/4 inch below the hanger and the whole contraption made me VERY nervous, so up went the floor jack again.

I put the jack stands either on the front hanger or behind the front spring shackle on the frame.

Yeah I ended up with them on the front hanger for a day or two. Behind the shackles seemed iffy to me.

Here is todays progress. I came up with a 3 point stance in regards to jacks/stands. Please talk amongst yourselves and then give me your critiques since I don't really know what I'm doing here.

It looks like you have new wheel studs on that SA. Did you buy new ones or did they come in your kit? If you bought new ones can you link me up to where you got em. I need new ones.

Keep up the great work!

I think I got them at Checker. (might be Schucks or Kragen by you) I think I got the Dorman ones though now when I double checked the Checker site they have 15!?! different parts. Also had good luck with Rock Auto.
