your vs you're

Hands down the biggest grammar error I've spotted on this board. I'm sure I make plenty of errors too, but I read this one daily, and it kicks my OCD into gear

Quote:
your (yr, yôr, yr; yr when unstressed)
adj. The possessive form of you.

1. Used as a modifier before a noun: your boots; your accomplishments.
2. A person's; one's: The light switch is on your right.
3. Informal. Used with little or no sense of possession to indicate a type familiar to the listener: your basic three-story frame house.
Quote:
you're (yr; yr when unstressed)
Contraction of you are.
I feel much better now.

The internet and instant messaging has cause soooo much bad habbit grammar. I think we all know good grammar, but it's easier/faster to not type apostrophes, abreviate words, etc. HOWEVER, it's getting a little too bad. I'm the perfect example. I recently wrote a "personal statement" for grad-school and I could not beleive how AWEFUL my grammar was. I was top of my english class in high school...went to college and never took another paper writiting class again b/c of my computer degree. Holy cow did that have a effect on my writing mechanics. It's not that I do not know proper writing. I just fell into the informal writing habbit...and it took over my life. Some days I spend 10+ hours straight with a computer and find myself saying L - O - L to myself when a co-worker cracks a joke. SAD SAD SAD.

I blame instant messagner and these damn forums I have the "..." disease.

haha...I have fat fingers. But you could understand everything I wrote...so who cares? These forums are informal...as long as people can easily read what I write...I pretty much don't care.

Let's not forget "it's."

For some reason some posters put the ' in there when the aren't saying "it is".

Id like to see some research done on internet "slang"/abbreviations being mixed into our everyday language. Like ebonics I guess. I actually say prolly every now and then instead of probably.

Actually, unless I'm doing formal writing (specs or whatever) then I tend to write like I talk... Contractions and all..

That means you'll see me using "Aye", "Kickin'", "'k", "wanna", "whatcha'", etc. It's a way to express your personality in written word.

Personally, I think it takes more work to "write like you talk" than not; or for that matter, trying to read a written statement from someone who you know - and you _know_ they don't talk that way!

e.g., "I am coming over tonight" versus "I'm coming over tonight"... I dun't tink (more of "me") I know anyone that speaks without contractions.

I would have said "I'm'uh comin over tonight" - nothing like blending "I'm" with an "uh".

the your/you're mistake is one of my biggest pet peeves for some reason. i can't stand that. and it's pretty common, even in publications you'd expect to have that kind of thing edited out.
i know how to write a gramatically correct paper, but i do slack on the internet. notice the absense of capitals. and i'll use "pry" for probably. i'm a big fan of "..." too.

I have a tendence to write as I'm thinking when I'm typing and in doing so I tend to to write a long run on sentenence that just blends from one idea into the next without the proper punctuation such as commas and periods to allow proper flow of my thoughts I will however use "........" when I want to seperate my thoughts. (wheww)

Simple spelling is annoying, especially obvious typos.

What gets me is two fold. First, paragraph breaks. I refuse to read posts that contain blocks of text that run for more than 5 lines. Second, period use. It is not a big deal here, but long, multi-clausal sentences or no periods at all seem to be really above and below the requisite level.

How about lose and loose?

Used in a sentence: She always loses her keys. She has loose manners.

Phonetic spelling is a worse offense than a spelling error, but it's not that bad considering we have a member or two who have never seen paragraphs
