You know what makes me sick?
I can't stand seeing people with 4wd 4Runners doing stuff just for looks. I'm not talking about new grills, painting this painting that, new wheels, etc. I'm talking about lifting it, trying to decide which tires just look better, maybe an ARB to look tougher.
If you want a 4wd just to say you have it, trade with me and put a 4wd decal on the back and you're set! I've spent $4500 in mods to make mine driveable and not a grocery getter/mall cruiser. I've taken mine through about as much #%&@ as it can go through and now I have to spend another ~$4500 to make it 4wd! Thanks for letting me open the steam valve. Jim

Totally agree with you. I've got a friend that has a 98 tacoma. Lifted, 33's, etc. ALL FOR LOOKS. It drives me crazy especially when he says, I bet my truck can do better than your truck can (my old one that is). But, hey, each to his own.

I agree too. I beat the crap outta my 2wd (with love) and am doing as much as I can to make it as capable as possible, at least till I can afford a trail rig next summer.
Are you converting your runner into a 4wd?

Yeah, I'd rather see a lifted poser than a lowered ANYTHING.

I can see where you are coming from. But I think its cool to see customized vehicles (either dropped or lifted) than a bunch of stock rig's. I don't care for dropped or bling rigs but its their ride...

So what...to each their own. To many people, moding their 4wd's is just a hobby. They like a certain look...so they lift, tires, sliders, etc. They obviously have the money to do so...they obviously enjoy doing it...so what is the problem with it? So what if they never wheel it...no skin off your back, unless you're as jealous as you seem? It's not their fault you bought a 2wd...and I highly doubt it's seen "as much #%&@ as it can go through"

Yes it has seen as much #%&@ as it can go through...without needing new body panels. I dont have a single panel without a dent and a scratch down to the metal. Just because I haven't needed two new engines due to drowning doesn't mean I haven't tested my Runner. You doubted, but you were wrong. I just needed to blow off some steam that I gathered from another thread.

Hmmmm
Guess I never understood why some people think you must have dents in every panel and scratchs and other carnage to prove something. I guess it just depends on what you want to do with your rig. My interest is in getting off the paved roads and exploring, maybe a little hunting, fishing, target shooting, etc. Getting up in the mountains in the winter. Stuff like that.
Is it OK with you if I continue to mod my '84 for that stuff? You know, winch bumper, winch, gears, tires, high-clearance crossmember, etc? That OK? Christ almighty. Jim

FYI: Even with my old '96 I still considered myself a web wheeler. 99% on-pavement - 1% off. I modded my 4Runner as a hobby...I had an abosolute blast doing it. I was able to take it wheeling around 25 times in the 7 years I owned it...totally worth the money I dumped into it. Learned a whole lot, met some really cool people, even found a roommate. It's not about what you do with your truck...it's how you love it This is why I am an advocate of kids "ricing" out their hondas. It's a hobby, they learn something outside of school, and it gives them something to work towards. Who cares if it does a quarter mile in 18 seconds... doesnt mean I cant laugh at em though. To each thier own...

I look at mods as a way of expressing yourself. A rig isn't your own until you make you first few mods. Everyone has a different idea of what their rig should look like, and if you wanna put 20's or 22's on a 4X4, I personally think you have the wrong rig, but hey, that's you biz, and your dime.

I agree with Birdman's statement "... mods as a way of expressing yourself."
Some folks get caught up in the "bling" effect and walk a line between a sweet ride and over chromed POS (IMHO). I believe in practical accessories but, that's me. |
