Try looking to see if Nero still has their demo of their software.
If they include the app in it called Showtime, that is a DVD playback player, and will have the codecs in it.

Then you could use either it or Media Player to view the movie.

i found a program to use and during install it said it detected another decoder present and recommended i remove it before installing the new one. i installed it anyways and media player would lock up everytime. i guess i have to remove the old decoder even though i didn't think there was one and have no idea which program it is.

legally? there cant be any free ones. well without DeCSS.

remember, every single thing (either a standalone DVD player or a software) that can play back a DVD movie needs to PAY the DVD consortium a license fee. (IIRC, that fee applies to each single item. so if they sell 1000000 pieces, they have to pay like $30 each time. so it makes me wonder sometimes, how some of those really cheap standalone DVD players can be sold by like walmart and others for like $35 each...)

by paying this fee, they are given a software"key" to unlock the CSS (content scrambling system), which is the copy protection built into each and every copy protected DVD.

anyways, without DeCSS, you need to pay for this decoder or you cant playback the movie...

as a side tip, find some really old DVDs that came with their own built DVD software to playback on computers. look for movies around 1998'ish...

for a funny look back as DeCSS and the weird and wacky world around it:
