Why can't you pump your own gas in Oregon?

I was down there recently and would ask people what the reason was, but everyone has a different answer.
Is the other state you can't pump gas New Jersey?

Yes at least one other state was NJ I dont know the exact reason that we weren't allowed to.

I believe it might have been an EPA regulation there?

Lived there 30 years and I never asked why? It was just nicer to sit in the car, but now I am curious.

Yeah, my friend lives in Oregon and said it is to help employment. I stopped at a gas station in Eugene and jumped out and started to fill up the gas tank like usual forgetting I was not supposed to pump my own gas and the attendant came out running and nearly had a cow. Their service is also going down too. This guy did not bother cleaning my windshield like they are supposed to do. I don't mind doing it but if they are going to force full service on me then they should do it properly. I'm done bitching now!

I have heard the story why. The details I give could be inaccurate, however Ill serve you my memory.

All gas station were full service up until the recession. To ease the cost of fuel, the government allowed self service at a reduced cost, saving the gas station to pay for an attentdant. Oregon never allowed self service to preserve 10's of thousands of jobs.

Yay oregon.

I went to florida about a year back. I sat at the gas station pump for about a minute before I realized it was my duty to pump.

W()W when I work at a gas station you would see ppl ripping the hoses out from the pump all of the time. Also look at the pic phong posted. Notice the 4Runner in the upper left:confused:

When I came through Oregon on my recent WA trip, they didn't clean my windshield even once...3 stops total....

Gas was rediculously expensive from CA to WA, especially when your buying super the whole time
