Where do YOU draw the line?

where do you draw the line and stop trusting you toyota.

at what age or miles or both do you not go on that 4K mile road trip, or whatever.

for me i think it's 8 years old or 150K miles, then it's the grocery getter.

What? only 8 years and 150K miles!!?

Isn't this kind of self-explanatory. I mean if your truck runs great, and has no problems, then I would take it cross country and back. Sure, if you have a problem, that could spindle itself into something big and leave you stuck, then you know not to push it like that. My truck is 13 years old, with just about 200,000 miles. If I had the gas money and had the time, I think that I would...

Another thing. Once you get too many miles, where the engine has "seen its day", why not throw another one in there? Get yourself a safe 100,000 more miles before any worries.

No offense, but you give up wayy to easily. Have you looked at threads that show how many miles these Toyota's get? easily 200-300K miles. There is a guy I have seen, and he has a blog online because he has an older Toyota pickup truck with something like 800,000 miles. He wants to get to a million. Same engine.

I might get a little concerned when my truck hits 250k but at the rate of mileage I put on it it'll take me another 10 years from my current 137k.

well, on my 98 taco i stopped the long trips at around 180K and 9 years old. but that was here in the east where service stations and repair shops are a dime a dozen. but i would have been real wary of going out west with that many miles and years. just because the truck would react more dramaticly to severe climate changes.

also i think my 98 just plain ran better and built better than my current 03 taco.

Until I start having problems, I wouldn't hesitate to travel in my 16 year old

With proper maintenance and repair, I do not see myself ever getting to that point with my rig.
Buying new and knowing the history of your rig is a key part of the equation.

I have a 52 year old Chevrolet that I would not hesitate to drive cross country and I have done so as late as 4 years ago.

I wouldn't hesitate taking my truck cross country with 230k miles with the 3.0. Just recently I had to recover a truck that weighed close to 6k lbs and my 17 year old pickup drug that truck home + the 1200lb trailer without any hiccups or problems. When it starts giving me reason to not trust it then I wont.

If your rig is giving you no problems and you take the necessary preventive maintenance there is no reason to not trust it.

depends on how well it runs to be honest.. I had a chevy z71 my dad bought new in 93, gave to me in 96 and drove it for 450,000 miles on a the original motor, trans, rear ends.. Towards the end about 430 or so the tranny went, had it replaced went another 20 thousand or so and the rear end popped, still ran beautifully tho.. I took it from portland oregon to Ft nelson british columbia 2 times a year from 96-2000...

I won't worry as long as I have done all my needed maintenance.

The only time I ever broke down was when I was a dumb kid who never checked the radiator water. I was driving up the grape vine here in southern california, pedal to the metal, blasting the metal, and all of a sudden went BOOM.

Since then I have vowed to make sure I do everything on my truck, and I haven't had problems since! I don't really know when I'll stop trusting it.

Never, i never draw the line unless there is no body for rust to eat away at. if/when my 3.0 finally goes, i'lljust get a 3.4 or 4.7. for me i couldn't care less about how many miles there are on my rig.

You haven't lived until you are relying on a truck that is over 15 years old with 235,000 on the clock to get you out from the middle of Nowheresville, UT.

It's always a thrill to turn the key in the morning after sleeping in a tent and here that motor fire up. I can't even remember the last major road trip I did in a vehicle with under 100,000 miles on the speedo.

I agree with the others though. If you keep an eye on maintenance... never fear the road trip.

Especially if there is a Toyota badge on your grill.

mines got damn near 300,000 miles and still puttin out 165psi of compression in all cylinders. shes got no oil leaks, only goes thru half a quart in 3000 miles. only problem i know of is the exhaust mani is cracked(typical ive heard), and the freeze plugs below the exhaust mani are leaking. other than that she runs like a clock. once she gets to 350,000 miles im gonna have someone paint the energizer bunny on the side, except with old charger colors instead of pink. why? cuz she just keeps goin and goin and goin.......

when i was out in Utah this summer driving on RT 95, i was thinking that if one breaks down out here you'd be in a world of hurt.

the reason i bring this up, is we're going to be going on an alaska road trip in a couple years, i figure my 03 taco will have around 100k on it by then and be about 7-8 years old. it's even more desolet up there than the west in places.

i had no problem doing the 10k this past august in the taco, but it only had about 40k on it then.
the truck is very well taken care of, except the minor dent's from trees.

i'm just trying to get some input on what you all would do.

The lowest mileage vehicle I've owned had 168,000km on the clock when I bought it. The highest was somewhere north of 380,000km (for 2 years the speedo cable was broken, so I know it was more) This past summer I took a 3200km road trip in the 4runner with a little under 250,000km on it. I'll trust it until it lets me down. Then I'll fix it.

Like other have said you give up WAY to easy. I have a friend with a 4runner just like mine only a 96 model and with over 340k miles! Just this last christmas he drove it up north somewhere for family get together. And made it back without a single problem.

Oh, and his truck has NEVER have a problem other than regualr maintince. the only problem he ever had was a $15 heater valve.

Until i have problems i fully trust my truck to do whatever i want it to do. When it starts having problems then i will see what i need to do at that point. Though down here in the south if the engine goes i will just swap in a 3.0 turbo diesel and make a trail rig since the frames will last forever.

i'm not talking about driving around town, or really anywhere east of the mississippi. i'm talking about middle of nowhere, not a person for miles. might as well be in africa or siberia. there is no way i would drive a vehicle with 250k on the clock to the middle of nowhere.

250k, that might be a little much. But 200k would be no problem at all if there are no problems and you keep it running nice.

Years don't really matter either (well at least down here in the south, frames will litterally last forever).

Now as the truck gets older i might carry more parts and tools with it since i can fix any minor problems myself. and the chances of a big problem are pretty slim with that few miles.

You're not going to hang a interesting sounding vehicle out there like that and not give a little more info since I'm not sure I'd trust too many cars over 35 years.

with gas prices (not to get that topic started again!), i don't use the yota for any out of town trips. then again, i never leave town so i guess i could say that i trust my 4runner to go anywhere i need to go on any given day

only been on two big trips in the 4runner, iowa to NY and iowa to Chicago and she performed beautifully! that was pre bigger tires and lift so it might not be as pleasant now

I was thinking about this the other day after I eclipsed 150k miles. Is there another SUV out right now that I would replace it with if the engine or tranny blew up? The only 2 others that would qualify would be the same age Montero or the new LR SUV sport and we all know how reliable both of those 2 dogs are.....so, I will probably just keep putting in new engines and trannies as I need them!

I would say 500k or 35 years per engine/tranny combo.

I am not able to trust mine for long trips. I have only had it for about 30,000 miles. I'm waiting for my house to be built before I tear into her. After that, I'll trust her as soon as I get a good feel for what she's tellin me.
