Some insurance companies will allow you to list a vehicle as recreation or limited use. If they do, insurance is usually very reasonable. They figure it's barely on the roads.
Then you can get this pickup and truly make it into a trail vehicle, and not worry about damaging your DD. For $1200 seems like it would be hard to go wrong.

I would go for the pickup. It's got less mileage, and personally, I find working on the 22RE much easier than the 3.0. For example, if you every have to do a HG replacement on either one, the 22RE is probably the easier of the two to do. Good luck on your decision and I agree that $1200 sounds like a great deal. If I were given the same opportunity, I wouldn't hesitate to take the pickup.

depends on which one you want the most. 4cyl. would get you better miles per hour. Then again nothing cooler than the 4runner with the top off. Seems like the 4cyl might not have as many issues as the 3.0 and would be easier to work on. Put a feeler out for the 4runner and see what kind of intrest you can get in it. Sell it and you might have some spare cash for upgrades on the truck...

My thought process exactly. I LOVE the 1st Gen. 4Runners. My kids love riding around w/out the top. But, I would like better gas mileage, and I love looking at the engine bay of a 22re compared to the 3.0.

I'd suggest the truck for all the reasons stated.
I'd also check to see what you could get for the runner. If you could sell the runner for the same or more, then it's an upgrade (in ways) for free. |

Okay I just got an email from the guy who owns the truck. It turns out there are some issues that I previously was not aware of (reflected in a pretty low price)
1) According to him the engine shakes above 35 miles per hour. He doesn't know why. 2) Just had new clutch and new brakes (3 months ago). 3) He indicates that occassionally he hears a noise in the rear differential. Doesn't know what it could be. What do you think?

Well the truck sounds ok, sounds like a motor mount maybe. Who knwos what the rear looks like..
I say even if you buy/dont buy, if you really want a pickup then go for one. List it on insurance as a limted use vehicle. I have a corvette this way and it only costs me 200 a year and they stipulate it has to be driven less than 3,000 miles. I just lie to them alot about what I actually drive, its that simple. Worst case scenario tell them the odo broke hehe.. This way you can have both and have very low ins payments.

well I'm not quite as gung ho about it as I was obviously.
I've been waiting for him to sell it for a couple of years. Primarily because of the 22re/5speed, rust free, etc. However it seems as if maybe he's waited till just enough things have went wrong with it to sell it now. I'm going to drive it and see what I think though.

What makes you think the 22RE is any more fuel economical? Mine is a pig since it was new. It gets 13on the hwy on its best day if I stay off of it. The differental might need the outside bearings. This is an easy job. You don't have to go inside the pumpkin on mine. For $1200 you can't go wrong. They go up to $4500 in showroom condition. There is almost no mileage deduction. $50 at the most. I have the base model with the manual steering gear, no power. Make sure you want that.
Even in a mini-truck it is a bit of a bear from a standstill, you have to leave a little room to crack the clutch and steer. Try getting a flat. I personally have never had a engine shake in mine. Could no say on that one. It is a dream to work on. Partialy because it rarely fails me. Better without that P/S pump hanging off the front. Last edited by timebandit; 01-13-2007 at 06:33 PM. |
