Chris, what about our chat room?
Seems no one uses it, and it is a perfect place to communicate instantly.

well I thought the political threads where not even allowed and seems like it is a troll that has been posting them it is not to hard to see they are trying to just rile people up look at the peoples profiles that post up those threads they might have contributed one or two actual things to the site and the rest is their own drama.

and for all the negative people if you want I have a link to a few free online text/turn based games where you can harass people to no end and no one cares.

one of the nice difference between shoutbox and chat room. is that 1) its on the main page, so its easy to see. it doesnt get lost in "helpful Links" 2) doesnt "start clean" when a user logs on. the previous conversation is shown regardless of when it happened. it this allows for conversation to happen even if its an 4 hour after thought. it doesnt require everyone to be in the chat room to talk. Let me make some changes to www.pacific-crawlers.com so that the shout box is shown even if your not logged in. right now i have it hidden until you log in so that lurkers dont see whats being said. i'll disable that for a bit so ya'll can see what i am talking about.

thanks

if you goto www.pacific-crawlers.com you can see how i've implemented the shoutbox. (again, for right now its set so ya;ll can see it with out having to be logged in. normally it is not show. so if you are reading this a few days/weeks from now and cant see it, its cuz i've changed it back) right now its set to shwo the last 20 "shouts" but that number is changeable. i love having the shoutbox on the forum but i also reconize that there is a huge size difference between YT and Pacific-crawlers.... 32000 users vs less than 100.

yep. http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showt...light=shoutbox

the lite version is free. there is a pro version (link inside link above) there are alot more moderation controls and features in the pro version. like i said, i'm very tempted to pull the trigger on getting the pro version

not much is required. download, move files to server then you ahve to copy/paste code to the FORUMHOME in the styles manager. i can help you with it if you need.

The chat is a good idea, but its so far buried in the system, no one knows how to get to it. Then you have the issue of getting enough people on at once, who want to talk about the same thing, to make it worth it.

I will have to look into that Chris.

Coug, it is not that hard to get too being up in the Helpful Links dropdown box.
I use to also have it listed where the forums are listed here.
http://www.yotatech.com/forumindex.php

The chat does work good though, as good as any IM program.
To bad it does not have the cool stuff MS Messenger does where pigs fly across your screen or the nudge smile that shakes the whole screen.

I get that its easy enough to get to, but its hard to find. Who would think to click "helpful links" to find a chat program? even myself, a well seasoned veteran, had trouble finding it when it was moved. And since its not right there to click on the main page, most postings/rants/non-sense end up in Off-topic.

Most people, myself included, are impulse clickers. If we see something that stands out, or is new, or easy, that gets clicked first!

Yea i don't know how well the chat box would work on a large community like YT. It seems like a good idea. The YT chat is barren I have only seen a couple of people in there throughout the days when i have logged in at work. Most of us are pretty busy during the day and we have a chance to log in every once and a while to try to answer a question or ask a question. Making that connection when both the question asker and the answering party are on at the same time is rare. The Shoutbox is nice because it keeps a running tally no matter if your logged in or not, so if somebody asked a question 2 hours ago you would still see it in the log when u did get a chance to login. With the huge community tho the fighting chance is high like DTB said and it could be hard to moderate.

Is there a way to delete peoples shouts by a mod ect? Tofer?

Just brainstorming while at work.. dunno if thats a safe concept or not but eh.. who cares

Sure there is a way to moderate the shoutbox...its just hard to do it 24/7/365....... I see issues between the street guys and the off road guys fighting...other off road forums (i.e. Marlin, Trail gear) dont have that problem on their sites because they are strictly OFF ROAD oriented, unlike this site

Agreed. That would be a big drawback to the Shoutbox. It's a great idea but, hard to maintain

Well I have noticed a couple times when I logged on, and saw quite a bit of off-topic rants and raves.
I am not sure that it means that YT is being "ruined" that seems a bit harsh, but I definately know the arguing we could do without. There seems to be a saying "agree to disagree" which seems nicer than totally negating everything that someone says...

I found the chat feature on YT once and not one person was on lol. That surprised me but then again, its a forum..

Actually FWIW and this is no way the position of the staff in general here at YT but most of the fights I've had to "referee" seem to be with people who like a certain product/mod and those who don't. Around here the "serious off roaders" and "street/mall crawler" groups get along just fine in a general sense.

also FWIW. moderating the shout box would be just like moderating the forum. people are going to do things against the rules, you'll have to take action. it happens 24/7. whats teh difference between dropping f-bombs in a thread and doing it in the shoutbox. it will still be logged. i dont see much of a difference between 2 people "e-fighting" in the shoutbox and 2 people e-fighting in a thread where they hit F5 every second until the other guy replys..... well minus their post count.

I would rather miss an e fight in a shoutbox than log into YT later and see it hanging around in a thread.

Here's how a dispute is settled in my area:

People would be wise to heed this twelve year olds advice.

By the way, that kid probably could out wheel me too.
He drives his dad's FJ Cruiser all the time at Moab and other places.
Plenty of vids of him wheeling over there.
